I recomend to try few games:
1-Depths of Peril(here few clans fight over dominance in barbaric town)
2-Din's Curse(its more dungeon crawler, where player character must save villages from evil that lurks beneath surface)
3-Zombasite(clan managment and village defence is major part in this one)
4-Din's Legacy(continuation of Din's Curse but with more different scenarios)

Gord
Still in development, but by the looks of it, it's a spiritual successor
Old, but Soulblazer on SNES was kinda one of these games. :dewey:

I just found Gord recently - excited for it to come out. Another game that reminds me of hinterland is The Guild 2.
There isn't much combat in it but I get the same vibes in some areas.
Cult of the Lamb has been doing the rounds online and is pretty good. You are a Lamb running a cult so you have to build a village and often go out on crusades to eliminate other horrbile gods and their followers. Pretty much Animal Crossing mixed with Binding of Isaac.

Idk what these other reviews are going on about. If you haven't played the Majesty series (Majesty Gold is good) which is the direct inspiration for this game, then you should.

so i played it, and though it's a good game. it's missing the key comparison to hinterland. where I play as both the fantasy hero adventurer, AND the one who develops and manages the town

Kenshi

I was on the Kenshi Reddit reading some thread about similar games to Kenshi and Hinterland came up. so I installed it because obviously I already had it in my backlog, probably from a bundle a decade ago.

Fun little game. No interest in playing more than a couple of games but a fun diversion.

Rimworld, Keplerth, Core Keeper, Terraria, Kenshi.

Honestly, there is a lot of options.
