(Spoilers) Point of this clue for marble puzzle?
Spoilers if you haven't beaten the game.

As we know, part of figuring out the marble puzzle is figuring out where the marbles go based on how they match up to the island "tetris pieces."

There is a diagram in a journal - I believe it's in Gehn's office - that shows a 5 point star, pointing to the golden dome, with each point of the star paired to a tetris piece. I thought this meant that I needed to pair the tetris pieces with each of the islands based on the windows pointed out of the golden dome. When I did that, though, the marble puzzle didn't work. So eventually, I just went back to the island with the large scale tetris pieces, looked at them from above, and surmised which piece aligned with which island based on what I knew about the geography and shape of each island. This felt too trial/error compared to the rest of the clues, so I feel like I missed something.

Ergo, what was the point of the page in Gehn's journal with the tetris pieces?! It seemed to not help at all and actually totally threw me off track.

I think that page might have been just a map to show that each island is represented with each "tetris piece" and connected to the dome. Just to confirm/reinforce what you might gather from inspecting the world.
The windows pointing out of the dome also reinforce the symbol for each. And then you can learn the color of each symbol/dome/island which is the last piece to know which marble goes on which tetris piece/island.

Also, for the marble puzzle to "work," you need the activation energies for each color to input in the slider above the marble board together with putting each marble on the correct quadrant of the correct island "tetris piece."

Yeah, I think the general conclusion that we've come to is that the drawing in the journal page (which is a holdover from the original game, which had a different version of the fire marble "puzzle), is largely just flavor for the story in the remake, and not necessary to consider for figuring anything out. As Henry pointed out, the windows in the golden dome serve just fine for that purpose, as well as the Survey Island device.

Gehn made a mistake when he drew that diagram in his journal. You know, he's not perfect...

No wonder he can't write lasting ages.
