Using the starry expanse as a shortcut: how?!?

Alright, how are you suppose to use the expanse as a shortcut?

I have all 5 bridges extended, gotten the achievement for it. And ...

Even if I can manage to rotate the thing to line up a bridge, how do I tell which one is which? I want to get back to the main island, and ... which bridge do I aim for? How do I tell? What identifies a given bridge to a given island?
