Riven

Game does not start in VR mode
When trying to start the game in VR mode the game full screens on my monitor, I see the Unreal and Cyan logos, then it just stays black. My VR headset (Bigscreen beyond) or SteamVRis not starting up at all. If I launch the game from within SteamVR I get the same effect on the monitor, and in vr it just says "Riven - Next up" and stays like that until I turn it off.

Any ideas how to fix this? Is it related ot OpenXR? If so, how do I debug that?

I don’t have your headset (I’m jealous though!) but when I launched it in VR the FIRST TIME it took long in that “Riven - next up” state. I almost force quit, but after a minute or two it launched and never took long again.
I did have to set up steam as OpenXR client for the Oculus CV1 controllers to work though.

Thanks for your reply Henry, I just came back to report I got it to work.

I have to run steam as an administrator for it to work, I'm not really a developer but my hunch is that something about my openXR is set up weirdly.

But now everything seems to run as expected, I'll do some more poking around and come back to this thread if I manage to solve the whole "having to run steam as administrator" thing, that sounds unnecessary if you ask me..

See if these steps works for you Ram
1. Close Steam and SteamVR
2. Run steam as administrator
3. (Do not start up SteamVR manually) Launch Riven and pick "Launch Launch Riven in VR (OpenXR) in OpenXR Mode"

If I already have SteamVR running then the game will just launch on my monitor 🤷‍♂️

I also uninstalled my Oculus app (I'm no longer using my quest) and removed this key from the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Khronos\OpenXR\1
I'm not sure if those last two things did anything, but it was some tips I came across while trying to get it to work.

I just found the root of my problems with openXR. I had an environment variable called "XR_RUNTIME_JSON" pointing to an old oculus install. Probably something I set long ago and forgot about. This caused OpenXR to not launch properly. Removing that variable makes it possible for me to start the game in VR mode without having to launch steam as an administrator.

For future player's reference, there is a launch option in the Properties when you right click the game in Steam. I didn't think to check until I read this thread.

Maybe this option was not available 6 months ago but it is at the time of writing.
