I did have to set up steam as OpenXR client for the Oculus CV1 controllers to work though.
I have to run steam as an administrator for it to work, I'm not really a developer but my hunch is that something about my openXR is set up weirdly.
But now everything seems to run as expected, I'll do some more poking around and come back to this thread if I manage to solve the whole "having to run steam as administrator" thing, that sounds unnecessary if you ask me..
1. Close Steam and SteamVR
2. Run steam as administrator
3. (Do not start up SteamVR manually) Launch Riven and pick "Launch Launch Riven in VR (OpenXR) in OpenXR Mode"
If I already have SteamVR running then the game will just launch on my monitor 🤷♂️
I also uninstalled my Oculus app (I'm no longer using my quest) and removed this key from the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Khronos\OpenXR\1
I'm not sure if those last two things did anything, but it was some tips I came across while trying to get it to work.
Maybe this option was not available 6 months ago but it is at the time of writing.
