Totem 1-6 puzzle to get link to Tay: I am completely stumped. For 2 days now.
I know the 6 totem stones I need to press down, and I THINK I understand the completely complicated and very obtuse (unless one is a Mensa member) numbering system, after finally giving up on finding the system solution from looking at a dozen walkthroughs and solution guides online, since the schoolhouse cheat sheet left me stumped.
I tried pressing the 6 totems in the order I THOUGHT they needed to be pressed, but no matter how many combos I try they just go back down.
I know this is randomized, but is there ANY order that any other player here found worked for THEM? THis is crazy, and RIven now, because of this puzzle, feels like a completely unlikable, overly complicated WORK CHORE instead of a game.

It sounds to me like perhaps you overlooked a critical clue regarding the number system. Gehn's journal mentions that the key to the numbering system is that you must know which direction is up. The Moeity device (the one that lets you see the hidden paint) lets you figure out which way to orient the totems to discover which way is up. Then, you must associate each number with the animal symbol, so you know which stone to activate and in what order.

This is one of only two major puzzles in the game, so its meant to be tricky and send you all over the game world to figure it out. Stay calm and enjoy exploring until things fall into place on their own. Focus your direct efforts on figuring out the number system.

If you want more direct clues, hints, or solutions, let us know what information you have so far, and we can identify what you might be mistaken about, or what youre missing.

I am not sure how, but right after posting this I tried a completely random solution I hadn't yet tried (I had kept track of exactly 86 combinations I had tried. INsane. I finally found one that worked, no more than 15 minutes after posting this. It's so completely random.)
THank you!

Nice! Glad you found something that worked. Enjoy! On your next playthrough, if you do one, you may indeed have to figure out the intended way of putting the order together, since it is randomized!

Also, if you save the game when you first arrive (after all the up front cut scenes) then when you replay the puzzles will be the same every time from that point. I will say though that part of the fun is figuring out the numbering system and therefore the order.
