Riven

Trapped in dark
After going to the top of the jungle island gallows, and through the secret rotating door in the prison, there's a dark passageway to the right. I started walking down it but it's pitch black. I now seem to be stuck down there, and there's no autosave I can revert to.

Is there a way to revert back to a slightly earlier point in the game without a save. If not I'm going to have to start the entire game again from the start.

Consider all of the tools at your disposal. There's a way through.

Not sure what you mean, there's nothing I can click on, and I can't hear footsteps when I try to move in any direction, it's like I'm stuck on something.

just quit the game and restart. Hopefully you have a checkpoint not too far back.

no issue with the game, this is all correct.
have you ever used a thing to see something you could not before?
or really to the point:
use the lens (keyboard R) to light up some marks on the floor

Try using the Moiety viewing glass that shows the brick you needed to push to open the passageway. It shows the invisible paint along the floor as white. Just follow that and you will reach a beach where a fire marble light can be activated and will provide enough illumination to see another one further back from the direction you came.

I didn't even know that that something I could do, I thought I was limited to just interacting with objects in the environment. Thanks.

How did you find out which stone to press in the prison cell wall, then?

Well I feel silly. I just cranked up the brightness and stumbled through until I reached the shoreline at the bottom. I mean it worked but it took me a few attempts. Something to remember for next time I guess...

Prisoner disappeared after opening the cell, figured it was the old loose brick trope. Hovered over each brick near where he was sitting until the hand icon changed.

@Kyoushu: Not bad, you "brute forced" it. But there is an other way to see things in the dark or hidden things in daylight. The 2nd hint of posting #4 mentioned already.

Nice, I did not know about the moiety viewing glass and spent twenty minutes in that room before giving up and looking for hints. That’s not how it worked in the original game.

Note: At no point in Riven will you ever be expected to brute force something. If you're "trying every brick", or anything along the same lines, then you have definitely missed something.

Note that the thing missed above is super important for something else major btw, so make sure to get it. ( And yes, it's an easy miss. I missed it for awhile too, but went searching because I knew something was missing. A lot of people are missing it in fact. )

Its impossible to know you are missing it or what 'it' even is. A major flaw with the game with no hints about anything ever. Even puzzles want give you feedback for the most part.

It might be difficult to find, but every single puzzle in the game is laid out. If you don't have a straight answer of "This should be X", then you have missed something.

Certainly, it can be a bit difficult at times to recognize the difference between "I haven't understood X" vs. "I am missing X", but that's to do with the challenge of requiring you to figure some things out.

The main thing I was saying though, is if you are at a point of trying absolutely everything with no rhyme or reason, then you have unquestionably missed something, and are best rethinking what you're doing.

Whenever I hit a wall like that, best thing to do is leave the location you are, and look around. Check your notes for anything related. Most of the time you have missed something, it's because it's somewhere else. ( Though there's a few where it's at the place, but easy to miss. <shakes fist at the boiler> )

Oof, yeah they should definitely prevent this from happening. I'd go as far as to say they shouldn't even allow the hidden button to be interacted with until the lens has been found.
