Keep in mind, this game was designed for mouse and keyboard. It was never geared towards a controller. This is a newfound novelty, to please the consolitis crowd.
Combos are definitely much easier with keyboard, i wasnt able to use most of combos on gamepad. K+M control has overaly quickier response and re-locking of enemies is much faster than on gamepad. I tried to play on TV with gamepad, but its not an optimal game for gamepad.
imho Huge problem of this game is bad locking of enemies, its the worst enemy lock i ever saw in any videogame. You can lock just from short distance which is not so bad, but also whenever i attack and enemy somehow move to side, then my lock is gone and my next attack aiming into air. And this is happening really often, again and again, i cant even count how many times i dies just cause my hero swing into different side like a tard and and meanwhile enemy sliced me into pieces from side.
Its a comical fight of blind knight against army of evil. :)

Spiders are easy, just use lower attack, not default one. Same low swing use for all barrels and chests.
