Are Piers necessary?

I've noticed I can park my boat on beaches or random docks, do piers offer any real benefit? ie. reduced chance of getting searched or something?

they were the first way of docking, then one of the recent patches added the ability to dock on beaches (which is a great improvement imo)

Now it’s nearly impossible to dock at a dock now. Just get rid of the docks in next patch.

there is a use for them in the later game.

the large yacht allows fast travel between ports
