Do no sells except the 3 required in the main quest. Listen to Jamal's message, but don't do it. You can stay in that demo for awhile that way, til it randomly leveled me up to 6 while walking on the beach.

Yes! (max. 3 people). A little quote from the FAQ:

"When starting a new game, click on the checkbox “allow joining” to make sure that your
gameplay session will allow inviting additional players. You can invite your friends to the game as early as during the character selection menu - by clicking on the “Invite” button next to their nickname. You can also invite your friends at any moment during the gameplay, simply by pausing the game with “esc” and clicking on the “Invite” button next to their nickname. When continuing the game from the main menu, remember to check the checkbox “allow joining” on a save that you will be loading to ensure that you will be able to invite your friends later."
