also 1 set is reserved for Q3 and can only be accessed when you get in Q3.
This below from Azazel
To do long and medium runs to get to 100% track knowledge, although i do admit it feels like a half baked thing to mimic these runs from reality to see tire degradation from where they calculate their tactic/pit/compounts, something that isn't really well done in the game..
Yet the tire rule is in the game thus we get them, even though you could do without those runs in the game.
So we have most optimal scheme for dry practices:
P1 -> one soft + one hard (or medium)
P2 -> one soft + one medium (or hard)
P3 -> one soft + one medium
If you want to use mediums twice in the race, than
P3 -> one soft + one soft
There is the bug: if you have used wet tyres during practice, Pirelli takes back two softs. So you can run one other dry set (meduim or hard) for having it used too.
P1 => Soft + Soft
P2 => Medium + Soft
P3 => Hard + Soft
And I choose the leftmost tyre of a type.
In the free market a 100% soft pirelli worths lots of money. ;)
Thats what I do too, sometime I switch up P2 and P3 where I use one soft and one hard in P2 and do the medium in P3.
But I always use 4 softs, 1 medium and 1 Hard over the 3 practice sessions.
Fun fact: This is the result of Covid19 which trigger rules changes to minimize logistic strain for a race weekend.
The rule is simple: You get allotment of 13 dry tires during a race weekend (+ fixed allotment of wet tires). After each practice session, you MUST return 2 dry tires to Pirelli. The game is clever enough to return the tires most worn first (contrary to what other said, you can used a soft in rightmost first and it will still returned if it one of the 2 most used tire in the session). If you only used 1 tire or using the wet tires because the session has rain, you still need to return 2 dry tires and by default the Softs will be returned because you have more of them.
What Covid19 changed, is every team now has fixed allotment of tires. Pre 2019, every team can freely allocate how many Softs, Medium, or Hard tires to compose the 13 dry tires. However doing it this way makes the logistic more complex since Pirelli need to wait for all the teams to sent their allotment request before shipping the tires to the event and often results in excess of unused F1 tires in the factory (that mostly just going to be thrown away with some recycle process) because tires can't be manufactured instantly and they need a buffer for the stock. This is why in MM you can select the tires allotment since it was made with pre 2019 rules.
No, otherwise teams could skip sessions to have extra tyres for the race
