I've not played as a team which makes their own engines so it could be there are options I'm missing but as far as I know there isn't any engine development at the moment so I think you may be assuming it will do something that it isn't designed to do....
Nothing improves engine Performance. The buildings improve acceleration and top Speed, but Not through more engine power. All aerodynamics what either gives Speed or downforce.
Engine suppliers only act as Base in certain areas on which you build up.
I'm currently top of the Constructors Championship with Mercedes around halfway through season 2. Managed to win the Drivers Championship with Lewis in season 1, mainly due to Ferrari imploding (very realistic!!).
I think for Mercedes you need to focus your design upgrades on Underfloor and Rear Wing as these will make the most improvement to your Top Speed.
... im dominating with renault 1/2 every single quali and race. you dont need power lol. RBPT with 100% power is worst engine supplier btw. in season 1 i made 4th place with over 300 points with aston martin and their mercedes engine. if you think power is best you are living under a stone.

thats how i do things. idk if hd is done when you watch it. excuse the way i talk, ive got a cold and english isnt my mothertongue.
To win with Mercedes in the first season is difficult, but if you are gonna develop an underfloor and wings (AND RESEARCH) then easily you can win in second season. Engine is really unimportant in this game.
Well you dont rlly need to win. I mean Look at Mercedes irl, they nearly catched Up to Ferrari and Ferrari got wins, Mercedes dont. Its about being consistent.
In my First season with Aston a win was Out of the question as Well, except for certain scenarios:
1. Dry/wet race where the tyre Life of the dry tyres on balanced didnt Match or get Close to the dry laps. Cause If it came Close you Had the Same strat and you would struggle against the AI. Otherwise you could Push, since Rain would be imminent anyway.
2. Dry/wet Quali where you get a dry lap in before Rain Hits. I Had 2-4 Ferrari, Red Bull, Mercedes drivers get knocked Out of Q1 Rest in Q2 through that. Then you got a shot.
3. Lucky Crash
Well everything, but in Order. Underfloor, Front Wing, rear Wing, sidepods/suspension, Chassis. Only until you Hit the hardcap, after that the Bonus is way to Low.
I just went from season 4 to 5, and it was a reset/overhaul of ALL car parts. Every single part got hit with 55% and underfloor with 65%.
I am finding it a little hard motivation to go back and play. lol.
Also for the topic starter, if you are relying on engine to improve your car's performance, then not only are you unawares of the rules of formula 1, but you aren't playing this game right either. Engines are frozen for the most part in formula 1.
If you want to improve the top speed, look up the design/research sections of rear wing. That should help you see that you need to design better parts.
You can compare your numbers to those of other teams to see how you stack up.
Out of curiosity, what are your component ranks (top speed) compared to other teams?
you just experience it. when you are at 50% you can easily have research that boosts a stat by 10%, while the same focus windtunnel, cfd, etc gives you only ~0.5-1.5% if you go past 80%.
