Sadly one of the perils of multiplayer is without a massive budget its quite hard to build up a large community around it - every indie dev I have spoke to has said the same thing, you can build all the systems but unless your game is a massive hit, it's hard to get tons of players playing multiplayer. This game has had decent sales, but it's been spread out over the 10 months since it's been live, so a lot of players have come and gone.
That's the main reason I designed the game around single player and added multiplayer as a 'bonus mode', I always wanted players to be able to enjoy the full campaign, explore everything there is to see, and then take on their friends later - if I'd designed the game around multiplayer only, well, I'd be disappointed in the lack of players for sure.
