My save file isn't deleted but the game acts as if there's no save file...
Hi there, yesterday I started a new game after the 1.0 release. I had turned automatic saves off but I made sure to save the game. Everything seemed to work well, but today now I found out that I can't access my save. The "Load Campaign" button is just greyed out for some reason.

I checked the save folder and everything seems to be in there, but I just can't load the game.

Admittedly, I just started so not much was lost, but I really don't want to suddenly deal with that problem with a save I played for longer. Could you please look into this?

Hmm, sorry this happened for you!

Firstly, make sure Automatic Save is turned on in the settings, which it should be by default...

But that's a strange one. All I can think of is somehow the save game got corrupted , or interrupted on save. Haven't seen it happen , but still a possibility! What I would suggest if you haven't gone too far with any one character, is delete your settings / save folder and start fresh.

Yeah, as I said before I turned Automatic Saves off. I didn't wanted to do automatic saves, in case I wanted to savescum for one reason or another, but I guess I don't have much choice, huh?

Yeah, I didn't got too far, so I'll probably just start over. Thanks for the answer!

Okay, it happened again, I made it further this time but once again, the game doesn't let my load my save. Just to make things clear:

- Automatic Saves is enabled.
- I checked the save folder and my file is STILL THERE, but the load campaign button is still greyed out.
- I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything abnormal with the game, I just played normally.

Is there anything that can be done about this? I really don't want to make another run that may refuse to load at any point.

Strange one, and strange its happened twice for you!

Never seen it reported anywhere else before so I'm not exactly sure where I'd even start to look for a fix. I'll investigate a few things at my end, but maybe in your case it is better to turn Auto saves off, make sure show loading screens is on and skip cutscenes is off ( in case any of those were different.)

Are you able to save a solo campaign character, quit the game, and reload it even once?

Also on this, don't delete those files in case I do find a fix so the game can find them again!

I just checked, and yes I can do that, and that's the weird part! Because with my previous character I was also able to load it before, but one day I start the game, and all of a sudden the Load Campaign button is greyed out and I cannot press it.

Also this may be important, the game showed the prompt to adjust my settings when you start it for the first time, even though I already started it multiple times!

Hope that helps!

Oh yeah that's really strange - that means its resetting the 'settings files' that keep track of which gladiators you have! That's not good!

I'll see if I can add some code in a future patch that scans your directory and can auto re-add gladiators back into a new settings file if it changes. May take a few patches but I'll write it down. Sorry about that, what a pain!

Well, that's good to know. Thanks a lot for the help! :lunar2019grinningpig:

This sounds like his antivirus or whatever is just cleaning his appdata folders. Like you know there's these cleaner programs like "Wise Cleaner Free" or whatever that can be scheduled to auto clean periodically. Sounds like this is what's going on

I could check that later, but as far as I can remember, I pretty much disabled all automatic processes in both CCleaner and my antivirus.

I think the solution long term is me writing some code to scan the directory for save files and adding them to the settings file, rather than doing it the way I've been doing it. Hopefully have this done in the week ahead!

Okay, apparently now I can load the save file again? But curiously, now the character I created just to test if I could load save files doesn't appear in the list of save files available to load? Very strange...

Still, that long term solution would be nice, just in case. Thanks again for the help!

Checking back in on this post - spend much of today reworking the load game system, so your old gladiators should be available to you once again now with 1.04. Thanks for your patience on this one!

Well, this is awkward... I don't think it worked, and I'm afraid it may have made things worse...

See, just today I discovered that for some reason, whenever I start a new session of Steam, both of my savefiles (my actual gladiator and my test gladiator) kinda ''switched'' states. As in, one savefile would become available and the other wouldn't. So I figured for the time being, I could work with that and if I switched correctly I could still keep playing with my actual gladiator.

But then, this update dropped aaaand... now once again I can't access any of my savefiles, even with the previous method.

So I don't know what to do now. Is there something else that can be done?

EDIT: Just to make things clear, I still have the save file, but no matter where I paste it, the game just won't detect it.

Okay, so what I think has happened is your save files got corrupted along the way , what you were describing would definitely have broken them. The game will not load corrupted files. But going forward, you wont have the issue with the settings being tied to the save games anymore.
