Gunner, HEAT, PC!

Nightsights and cannon sights issues.
Ok, so I’m playing through the tutorials now, and I’ve noticed some issues with the night sights:

T-80B, KPz T-72, KPz T-72M1, KPz T-72 LEM, T-64A, T-64R, and T-55 all have completely black night sights when viewed through the cannon sight (I can’t see a thing). However, I can access night vision when using the camera on the turret.

Oddly, the T-62 night sight works fine. (I’m guessing the lack of reticle illumination is a real feature of the tank?)

M1 Abrams and M60A3 TTS have no reticle in the zoomed-out night vision mode.

Another issue I’ve noticed is with the sight reticles: sometimes they seem to get badly adjusted horizontally. This usually happens when using the laser rangefinder. For example, when playing with the T-72, the red circle in the reticle would shift left and right, off-center from the black reticle (I should’ve taken screenshots). I had a similar problem with the Abrams once, where the shells didn’t land in the center of the reticle but way off to the right. Elevation seemed fine since I did use the laser rangefinder.

So, is the issue with the Russian tanks a bug or a feature of the night sights? And what about the other problem? If it happens again, I’ll provide screenshots or a video.

The Pact tanks have covers on the night sights during the day, which is why they are completely black - that's a feature. They are not intended for day use. Same with the lack of a reticle on the zoomed out thermal view in the NATO vehicles, that's just what they look like. The zoomed out view is for observation, the zoomed in one for shooting.

For the T-72 laser issue: as long as the red circle in the T-72 doesn't actually shift horizontally during gameplay in the same tank, that is also just how they actually look IRL. Getting the LRF aim point perfectly aligned with the gunsight was too troublesome, so they just have their own marker for where the LRF is pointing (and the exact spot is randomized for each tank in-game as they are never aligned in the same place).

The Abrams shots going right could have been caused by a few things, hard to say without a video - but it could have been some user error with the automatic lead (was this on a moving target or were you holding RMB and moving the mouse during this?) or maybe if the tank was canted which can also throw off the rangefinding and lead.

Edit: I think the official Gunnery Guides might also be worth a read in addition to the in-game tutorials for even deeper insights into the nuances of the game. All the points above are covered there in some form, and much more:

Hm… thanks! Well, not having illuminated night sight reticles in Pact tanks really sucks. Even a POS like the BWP-1 (that’s the Polish name for this vehicle—we still have them in stock, XD) has an illuminated night sight reticle. What the commies were thinking when designing those is a total mystery to me.

Anyway, thanks for the quick answer! Now, back to playing some more and writing a review for my blog. It’s a really nice piece of a game. I’m having a lot of fun with it now that I’ve mentally adjusted to the game’s turret control system. I had no issues with aiming via the sight (I play inverted), but I’m still struggling a bit when driving around with the camera in TPP view. I wish the camera would follow my mouse movement by default and stop only when I press RMB.

The black reticle still works decently when the target is lit by a spotlight, but without the spotlight it is indeed very difficult to use.

It sounds like you're not activating the IR spotlights. All the Russian vehicles have infrared spotlights (the big round thing next to the gun). You need to turn that on with the I or N key I forget which one it is. But it's part of the old school style of night vision they had back then. It's basically a two-part night vision system, and both parts are required to make it work. Without the spotlight turned on, the night sight will have almost no visibility. Keep in mind the IR spotlight is also a big fat vulnerable target. Shrapnel and cannon shots (and I think even 7.62 mg rounds) will easily destroy it.

MagneticJerk already provided the correct answer. I was looking at the tanks at the firing range during daytime. And night all things work as intended.
