It literally isn't. M833 will penetrate the M1IP frontally while 3BM15 can only penetrate the side of both the M1 and M1IP. Not to mention the VAST difference in armor. The T-72M can be penetrated from all angles by all ammunition fired by all NATO tanks in the game not to mention TOW and I-TOW.
Sure, the T-72 is more capable than most players give it credit for but it is FAR from "basically equal", in all ways (firepower, protection and mobility) it is drastically inferior to the M1.
EDIT: as for "if you know how to use it well", yes if you cheese the AI and sneak up on an unaware M1IP you can somewhat reliably kill it. But for any missions that aren't the pre-generated raid and spoil missions (as well as some older ones) is is borderline unplayable.
I agree that M1IP has way better armor than T-72, but regarding the firepower, I'd argue they are pretty much equal. FCS and thermals are obviously superior on the M1.
Perhaps when Soviet forces are added, as mentioned prominently on the roadmap, you'll find the situation more palatable.

Did the devs ever fix the M1 armor?
I think there's no T64 and T80 in the NVA,also there's not a 1981's T64A,mainly T64B is in 1976.
In 1985, the division began to be equipped with the T-80B.
On December 1, 1985, the division was equipped with 177 T-62s and 94 T-80Bs
The division was the main Soviet armored force in the Fulda Valley and was truly the front line of the U.S.-Soviet confrontation. However, probably for reasons of secrecy, the division's armament remained at the bottom of the German-based cluster.

I have fight M72 head on and even they not pen front armor BUT THEY PEN ROOF armor. Thx to that ammo rack door/metal sheet protection and also my crew sign out of relief that shot didnt kill them. The shot pen through roof turret and ammo room but the fragment did not soo I was saved. Another shot u gotto careful is that they will try to shoot ur driver view and gunner optic. It super aimbot
Note: Enemy first shot on me was aimbot like those. I was 1 vs 3 Tank and each one get to shoot once. Range bout more than 500m
