am I ever gonna be able to run this game properly?
My system is a bit dated, but still runs most relevant games quite well. On War Thunder (a game that I want to leave in favor of this game) I can easily get 100+ FPS on High settings, yet on GHPC even on potato settings I will get very jittery, inconsistent 30-40 FPS which will sink all the way down to 20 in heavy engagements with smoke and fire. Its borderline unplayable for me at the moment. I am not gonna refund it because I have high hopes for this but I hope devs eventually get around optimizing the game.

Here is the thing, there is a very high likelyhood that your low FPS isn't due to the smoke and fire during heavy engagements but due to what is happening with all the vehicles and projectiles flying around. The game is very heavily CPU bound.
The devs (4 guys in a shed btw) have also stated that optimisation is an uphill battle and bigger optimisation passes are going to happen down the line.

That's one of the things WT has going for it, big team, meaning that they can spend a lot of man hours on optimisation.

I'm going to paraphrase what you said for clarification, let me know if I'm close.

"My PC can run a 10 year old game just fine, so it should be able to run this, why can't it?"

even though War Thunder is 10 years old, it's graphical requirements are not even remotely close to what they were in 2013, and War Thunder was just one game I used to compare due to games sharing overall features (Tank Combat).

If you wanna go modern, I absolutely have no issue running RDR2, Cyberpunk and other AAA games that were published in a timeframe of less than 5 years ago. So yes, my PC can run reasonably graphic intensive games and at one point it should be able to run this Unity game with Arma resembling graphics when the devs are done with everything else and are ready to work on optimization.

Keep in mind war thunder maps typically have a very small area with high detail surrounded by VERY low detail landscape/buildings even at their best LOD when you are close in the case of ground battles. GHPC holds somewhat consistent visuals over sight lines at nearly 4 kilometres (and this is with thousands of trees in every direction), something war thunder only achieves on desert maps (its just sand). Optimization will improve things significantly, but the game should still be expected to be somewhat demanding.

System specs would be helpful in answering if you will likely be able to run it at decent settings later on.

Just to input some perspective here. Warthunder is a multiplayer game so it will have a lower CPU weight in comparison as the units are human controlled. GHPC loads up your CPU with AI routines as being a single player game.

Not everything is about LOD or graphical effects.

Check if your CPU is loaded up with Windows Task Manager performance tab while playing GHPC.

I don´t have Warthunder so my question is, how much do both titles compare for "simulation" value? Does Warthunder has AI players?

Damage models are pretty comparable to GHPC, crews, ammo rack detonations, armor pen depends on shell type and gun angle etc...

War Thunder is mainly PvP, there are PvE modes with ai too however.

Being in development since 2013, WT is far more developed and completedthan GHPC and is a substitute I use (will drop it when GHPC is finished)

The issue with War Thunder is that, being a f2p game you have to grind for tanks. You start in ww2 vehicles and unlocking mbts will take months if not years... (Playing since 2018, I only have German and Soviet MBTs and have not touched other nations like GB or USA) it's not pay to win but paying money for tanks and premium boosts does aid you significantly which is one thing I hate about that game.

thanks! 8) Looks like WT ain´t really my cup of tea then. I´m playing tank sims since the 1980ies and PvP never interested me.

I have only just been offered this game, got sucked in by the "offer" and I couldn't tell you how jerky it is because it just won't run. Because of a Steam error (I've been back as far as reinstalling Steam; it's a "modern" high-end laptop).

Can we please go back to buying software on a physical disk from a store where it stands alone so we've half a chance of it working...?

3 guys in a shed can easily release software on steam, you need a publisher and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of money to produce and ship thousands of physical disks

Problems with running the game has nothing to do with it being a steam install or not. On the other hand, it is much easier to release and propagate patches for the game with an established steam account than releasing patches on the developers site, and the 2 hour (or any) refund system is also very problematic with physical discs. Not to mention the periodic sales and discounts initiated by the publisher.
