That said, I don't think you will be happy with a gamepad for gunnery.
Even with a 16bit sensor Warthog, the joystick input isn't "smooth", (no/low priority by developer.)
While I use a Belkin gamepad adapted for left-hand use, be aware that combined mouse and joystick input isn't supported and will result in erratic mouse movement.
If you can remap the analog input to keystokes you won't have the problem.
Hopefully when the tanks with dual-axis stablization get added, the developer will add some customization, (smoothing) to the joystick response curve.
In real-life, the gunner is aiming a stabilized mirror and the FCS is aiming the turret/gun.
I've requested that there be an option to disable it and allow the vehicle speed to be set to a constant rate without having to repeatedly tap or hold the joystick. So far that request has been rejected or ignored.
As a workaround, I have my gamepad configured to remap the directional keys for forward/reverse to Cruise speed increase/decrease when a convenient shoulder button is held. (The cruise speed feature could almost resolve the issue with the autocentering, but doesn't work in reverse.) With the number of immutable saplings in the game, backing up is something that needs to be available.
Note: If you've using a analog joystick for driving and a mouse for aiming, you might experience a bug that causes erratic mount movement when aiming. If you use software to assign keyboard input to the analog axes, you won't experience this behavior.
I see, much appreciated! I will give it a try. I have no doubt that we'll get to the point where it will be easier, growing pains are no fun sometimes.
