Things go differently with the generous quest path, it's easier to make more yourself but you don't end up unlocking the passive generator.
Have you gone to The Capital yet? Once there you can start collecting Economic Incentive Tokens from sales in your shop, which can be exchanged for Inspiration directly (Inspiration is the item you use to make Art at the easel).
There's also an accessory that the Artist can equip to increase Art generation. The generous path leads you to the area it's in, but on the ruthless path you need to find it yourself. It's in an area north of the Woodway (the dark forest area just before Tutetown).
You can also set up your customer upgrades to prioritise needing less Art.
