As far as I'm aware it's only there to make the crosshair show up, giving the illusion of being able to interact with it. It was like that in the original anyway.
there is no escape from the nuke other than escape and restart/quit

The crosshair always pops up when near an object.

So let me put it this way: if there is a way to escape the countdown, as far as I have seen, it doesn't lead to the narrator commenting on it, and would most likely result in a game reset
You can choose to believe me or not its entirely up to you as for all you know I could be lying, maybe I haven't even played the game, maybe I am just a bucket and none of this matters, or maybe the buttons don't matter and its something entirely different.
no differences from the Source Engine version, apart from the bucket logic
