How to activate mouse and keyboard controls/settings?

As a fishing game enthusiast, I was extraordinarily excited to play this game, and bought it recently. I attempted to start the game, but hot take... I play with a mouse and keyboard instead of a controller, and kind of prefer that since I'm too lazy to configure controllers to my laptop. And also I don't really have any controllers that I can configure to my laptop.

Almost none of the keys on my keyboard do anything, the only way in which I'm able to progress past the title screen is by using my laptop's touch screen. I was able to start a new game this way, but was unable to move my character; the only key that did anything was esc, which opened up my inventory I presume, and clicking it again closed the inventory but that was all.

If I click on the Options on the title screen using the touch screen, then I can't do anything on the menu that pops up, whether it be with mouse, keyboard, or the touchscreen, and I have to force-quit the game to do anything from there.

Apparently, reviews of this game and a friend of mine suggest that this game CAN be played with a Mouse and Keyboard. Can somebody please help me with this? What do I have to do to get this to work for me? I was really excited to try this game out and this issue is really beginning to taint my experience with this game, and I haven't even had the chance to properly start it. Any help with this would be highly appreciated, and thank you for whoever can provide assistance.

I played through the game just fine with keyboard and mouse. In the Controls section it also only shows k&m keybinds, so I'm not sure if it's even meant to be played with a Controller.
Once in game you hit Esc to open inventory, where there's also a tab for Journal and Settings - including a list of rebindable controls.

WASD is used for walking, E to interact with npcs, Q to switch between tools (net/rod) and left mouse button for fishing. Right mouse button is only needed for fly fishing.
Not sure if it's something on your laptop that gets registered in the wrong way, but I just reinstalled the game to check and everything still works fine for me.

I don't know what's wrong with my game/computer then, because again, none of the keys on my keyboard work besides esc. I couldn't click on anything with my mouse or move my character.

I already got refunded for this game not long after posting this discussion. I'm thinking of just getting the Switch version instead eventually but I've been procrastinating on doing so and my poor experience with attempting this game on Steam has already left a sour taste in my mouth towards this game. I love fishing games, and this game has a fish encyclopedia, which is a hard requirement and I don't want to just back out of a game like that. But yeah. This was a very infuriating experience for me and it seems that there's no known fix for me on this issue.
