Chest icon during an adventure...?

Hello, sometimes when I take villagers/my monsters on an adventure, a chest icon appears next to their picture. I already googled but didn't get it.

Does that mean there's a hidden chest nearby, or does it mean they're dropping or have dropped an item?
That's also a thing with the dropped items, I read that Elsje throws dishes but I haven't seen it yet.

It means there is treasure nearby, slowly walk around where they are and a button will pop up

To clarify, it's an invisible item on the ground, near where they are, that will give you a pickup prompt. Mostly it's garbage, but there are two spots that have a daily random tree seed (one in the area straight east out of town, then turn right [south] after the mixed chipsqueek/orc spawn into a an area with a tree stump and sign etc, the other is near the body of water right next to Atohl's end in the Kelve Volcanic Area)

Eventually you'll also get a crest that you can equip that gives you that prompt without needing NPCs

And do the villagers give you something if you take them with you? Or only if you visit the hot spring with them, for example? :)

Some villagers will try to throw stuff at you sometimes. It will usually be food or medicine.

You can dodge the item and it will land on the ground and you can pick it up. It's actually an exploit that you can use to get valuable items early.
