Giving gifts to monsters works pretty much the same way you upgrade equipments with numbers being the main difference: Gifting a monster an item that give 300 vitality won't increase its vitality by 300 (we're talking single digit here but you can gift every day).
Lastly:
As far as I can tell accessories don't to have any effect. That means that you can't increase a monster elemental resistances through gifts.
Human companions are usually a better choice: while monsters may in theory have better stats, human can be geared and that's more than enough to compensate for their lower level. Most importantly with the right upgrade materials human companions have a massive impact on drop chances.
An item with a base 0.1% chance would go as high as:
- 3.7% if you have no human companions but have the right gear
- 18.6% with the whole squad properly geared for drop chances.
What else is there to buff drop rates?
The Rare Can is the biggest upgrade for rare loots as it adds a flat 3% chance to drop (per can).
Until you can afford to buy Clover seeds, your order of priority should be: as an upgrade material for you, turned into a Happy ring, turned into Happy Rings for your companions, as an upgrade material for your companions.
That spreadsheet has tons of info regarding monster gift.
Hornet type monsters (except Devil Bee) produce Honey every day as long as they're fed and that's also their favorite gift. It's going to take some time to get them at 30 friendship but you wouldn't have to farm anything.
Friendship aside I'd go for:
Elemental immunity.
Debuff immunity.
Melody Bottle to apply debuffs.
Small Crystals for increased attack. I wouldn't expect a miracle here, at 16 attack per days it would take a long time to make a difference. Assuming you have access to the Maze (and have the relevant crafting skills) Ten-folding Brilliant Scales into hat/torso/shield/boots would net you (or any human companion) 9600 Strength. That's 600 days worth of Small Crystal gifting.
Then you have EVs which means as long as you kill X monster X times will give them net benefits.
Though ideally you are better off carrying an entire party with rare cans and clovers and happy rings for better drop rates
