i will explain.
i don't exactly know how the character dialogue changes based on the relationship you have with them.
one way is to have something like "acquaintance" dialogue play up until a certain relationship level, followed by "friendship" dialogue, and then, "romance" dialogue if you opt to date a character.
if building relationships is structured in this manner, then i presume it would be relatively easy to allow for the implementation of "romance" dialogue for same-sex characters by simply unlocking the final stage of dialogue for the character you date. if that's how the game is, then there is no real change made to the game outside of a restriction being lifted, and that's fine.
if, however, the way characters speak to you was originally supposed to evolve romantically as your relationship deepens (again, i don't know exactly how the relationship mechanics work) then they would have to make changes to the dialogue at the tail end of development (i know for a fact the same sex marriage feature was tacked on at the end and was not considered throughout the development stage), which would have a direct negative impact on the quality of a core feature of the game.
i wouldn't get to enjoy a developing love story if the devs had to accomodate all dialog to be neutral before you choose your date (this is not the case since as i understand it there was no time to make changes this important to tack on this feature for the pc port) or, more likely, it could lead to bugs such as certain lines being played when they're not supposed to.
that's all i meant. wanted to know if adding this feature affected other aspects of the game or if all it was about was removing an arbitrary restriction that characters of a certain sex have.
Romance dialogue works the same way as normal dialogue where it's almost identical depending on whether you're playing Ares or Alice. Though I do admit some dialogue comes across as different depending on which gender you're playing. For me, I remember that I thought it was cool that Priscilla read books about heroic princesses, but as Ares they would be typical heroic prince books.
Finally, as someone said earlier, the only thing that differs between same sex and different sex couples is the dialogue for when you decide to have kids.
If you think about it, it's not that different from normal dialogue where pronouns have to be changed depending on your character. If they can do that for dialogue pre-dating, they can certainly do that for post-dating dialogue. I hope this all makes sense. Short answer: dialogue is gender neutral.
That is both due to a dialogue bug that sometimes shows a sentence that belongs to a higher friendship level, but also because just like in RF4, even as friends NPCs show a tiny bit of interest, but it is not obnoxious nor does it go too far, it´s RF after all.
You may have heard that sometimes, you are forced to do friendship events with characters of the same gender, before you are allowed to continue with the ones you want.
What the haters will not tell you, however, is that once again, even in JP 1.0 version, that already happened and has nothing to do with the inclusion of "The gais"
The reason why it happened from the beginning is that now, romantic or even simply friendship events start when you enter a specific part of town, and only 1 event can be "loaded" at the same time, which means that if someone´s friendship event loaded before your sweetheart´s event, you must complete it before you can proceed.
Let me make a practical example.
Let us say you are romancing Beatrice, and her first friendship event is in the town´s square, and her second event is in the Restaurant, whereas Reinhardt´s first friendship event is in the Restaurant.
What will probably happen, if you interact with everyone, is that you will unlock both events at the same time, which means Reinhardt´s 1rst event will load in the restaurant.
So once you complete Beatrice´s first event and want to do her 2nd, you will then have to complete Reinhardt´s first friendship event before continuing.
But, and this is the part that people lie about, this was the case even BEFORE the inclusion of the same gender patch.
The only thing that changed, really, is that now you can ask the same gender out, and 95% of the romantic stuff happens AFTER you propose anyway so....it´s not a big deal.
