so i played this on switch and honestly my biggest let down was
controversial take in the modern era, but its the same sex romance.

Now look i know what the instant push back is , Oh oyu are being homophobic. but hear me out here.

Some of the best interactions in RF4 as a male characters were with other male characters. Not because of romance but because the comedic bromance setting. Because this game effectively forces everyone romanceable in the village to be potentially bi by default so instead of just joking around and having fun banter with those of the same gender they eventually start blushing and acting akward about it towards you. and quite frankly its really jarring. Can't they just make a switch to turn that on or off when you start the game and write and voice in some new lines to get those oldschool style bromances back in the game for those who do not wish to be courted by the same sex as if they were the opposite?

Also obligatory, all the moms are better options than the actual bachelorretes joke.

Not to mentioned you're basically forced into doing romance cutscenes with characters you don't want to. At one point the entire map is flooded with both genders' cutscenes. and If you need to go to a certain location too bad, youre triggering an event that could take several in game days to complete before doing someone else. very annoying

should def be a toggle option when you start a game
"Are you into men or women or both" bam every issue solved.

But then there's the achievements.. there really should not be achievements relating to marrying everyone. thats just creepy and weird to me
Stardew Valley solved it fairly well by simply forcing you to start 'dating' a character before you got the romance events.

Personally, as a heterosexual male, I don't mind characters (of either gender) being flirty with the MC, but _all_ eligible romantic partners being stuck in a maybe romantic maybe platonic state probably didn't do the writing team any favors.

If I was designing a game like this I'd probably tag some gifts as romantic (in a very obvious way), and let a 'romance' score add/switch some lines of dialogue and trigger events (e.g. dates, romantic walks on the beach, whatever).
Doesn't really seem to be much of an issue.

None of the character events I've triggered have been romance focused. Just little events to let you get to know the characters better which I would think most players would be interested in regardless of intentions to romance the character.

I mean I have no intention of romancing the guys but it's not like interacting with them a bit will kill me.
if you make it a habit to try and interact with everyone at least once a day to maximize increase in scores you will start running into it, its not the events themselves its their response to you interacting with them. and if its true that this was changed in the localization that makes it worse for me. you effectively will make people avoid interactions with same sex characters due to forced romantisicm. its not just a complaint about what is there its is also a complaint about what isn't there anymore. butchering the original product in localization is not a new phenomenon though. but just because i want all modern localization teams to get unilaterally fired for inserting their own garbage in rather than faithfully delivering the original product doesn't mean it will happen.

You know the Japanese version was patched to include same sex marriage as well right?

I hear what you're saying and agree it could be better handled, but I'd rather a more organic approach vs picking a gay/straight/bi box at the start of the game. Characters flirty dialogue should only really be enabled if you ask them out on a date once but thats probably not optimal either as it suggests none of the characters find the protag desirable until their switch gets enabled, so you'd want them to throw out hints or take the initiative beforehand in some cases but then you're back to your original problem. I don't know what the answer; personally it don't bother me, I just laugh if its someone I'm not interested in, but I guess it's moot at this point anyway, unless a RF5 Special Edition will be released years from now like RF4.

Anyway the whole romance angle in this game is half baked at best - I married Lucy and the next day Simone said I better be careful about who I marry someday via her "extensive" repeating dialogue choices... uh, I married your daughter and you presided over the damn marriage. Im your son-in-law! And then Priscilla keeps asking me when our next date is. Woman I have kids on the way get a grip.

Seems accurate though i hear women like people who already have partners! you only succeeded in raising your appeal! all jokes aside though the more i think about the issue the more it ticks me off. but thats not just a RF thats just localizers as a whole

I really wish that was the case also , it's frankly the biggest reason for me not to buy it.
in rf 4 i played a girl so idk if it was different but the girls and even the protagonist would blush during these comedic gay moments that wouldnt lead to anything so maybe ur just thinking too much about it.

As someone who played JP 1.0 way before the "Same gender patch" the characters were already written like that and most of the events were exactly the same A to Z.

The real reason for this situation is the extremely small pool of dialogues the characters have to pull from, which is a massive step back from RF4.

People were already complaining in 1.0 that male characters were giving dialogues "intended for the female players" even before they announced the same gender patch.

And you were also forced to watch and do the events.

I haven't played RF4 at all, but I've heard the female player character was given blatant favoritism.

I doubt that. She was a fan favorite mostly because of her design and also she was the first true female protagonist but in game there's hardly a difference other than marriage options and some gender differences in events like the sleep overs
can't wait for the 3 remake to come out so all these people can freak out about how bi gaius is or zaid being a weirdo or "can i kiss you" carlos

those gosh darned localizer sjws forcing their gay agenda into rune factory since *checks notes* 2009
wasnt there this one character that if you did one of the romantic statements to them they basically called you a weirdo and told you to bugger off?

I've seen some pretty hateful threads on the topic, this isnt one of them, just saying.
that being said, some insane people who should have their public speaking privilidges revoked DID very openly announce that they desire using their authority as localizers to subvert content they get their hands on. Making it natural to be suspicious of everything they put out. contrary to popular belief, people do not like to be lied to, or subverted with selfish and malicious intent
