I made a huge mistake and used the shovel on the clay by the bridge! I know, didnt read it properly that doing this permanently stops it respawning. I was tired and it was late, my mistake. Can anyone please tell me where I can find any more. No traders I have met so far sell it and I get warnings for maintenance being low. I have plenty of stone and can buy chisel blocks but now have no clay which are the three requirements. I do normally like to find things myself but this feels like an emergency lol

Actually, one of the issues with acquiring clay, is you need it early in game play, BUT do not have the higher level pick-axe. This makes if very difficult to get it. So even if I do know the locations, i cant get any without using a shovel. No traders yet even have a higher level pick-axe for me to purchase.

Did you use the left-mouse button to remove the clay or did you press E (interact)?

I am pretty sure the clay respawns anyway you harvest it, but using e goes WAY faster.

What you want to do, because you get a LOT of clay when farming out just one "patch", is store some of it in a personal container. The villagers will gobble it up as maintenance resources if you drop it in general storage.
You can disable that behavior in dynasty/priority tab, but that has been bugged so it resets each reload, and I saw no mention of it being fixed in the patch notes and have not had time to test yet, just so you are aware

I waited for a season change and the clay did not respawn. When I went up to it, it said use either shovel or pick-axe higher than the normal stone. So I used a shovel not reading the next screen properly where it said something about it not respawning. Maybe because I didnt push E and used the spade, it is bugged and may eventually reset, lets hope lol. I have mostly used it for maintenance demand so when I couldnt top it up it now says villagers are going to become unhappy. up until now I have worked hard to increase population while keeping them with happy green faces. I have used very little for other things only when it was needed for a building. I am not sure how to use the priority settings. Everything by default is ticked. If I un-tick clay priority what happens? I have also just built the kitchen but it needs bronze and I have no idea where to get that. I have no special tools yet because smithy isnt unlocked so this is making it harder. Odd that you need these things BEFORE youve levelled up enough to unlock the smithy which is where I believe all the magic starts and I will be able to use copper and iron? Thank you for replying.

If you untick the clay box, your villagers won't consume clay. As far as bronze, I'm not sure myself. Getting ready to jump back in tonight or tomorrow.

Clay can be found anywhere near running waters, the river is a good place to get more.

I started a new game anyway, and odd that this time I have found alot more clay that I did not see before. Maybe previous game was bugged. I took this screenshot which shows if you harvest with a shovel it says it permanently removes it, it also shows the "E" you talked about. To me it looks like you have the option to permanently remove with the shovel or by pushing "E". Im not using a shovel! I managed to find a trader who I can get copper pick-axes from that again, I couldnt find in the first game.

I know what it says in the tooltip, and when I typed pretty sure, that is what I am (could for example be a bug that it respawns, and that could have been fixed in the latest update).
I came to this conclusion because I have "emptied out" specific areas multiple times.
Maybe it respawns slowly (like once a year or smthn) or maybe it is when reloading the game, idk. All I know is that it respawns. Not always in the same amount, but it def respawns at some point.

I have also noticed that some patches says "mine with pickaxe", but it seems you can still use a shovel on them (and +bronze pickaxe IIRC). Not sure what that is about.
