How can I find clay?

My friend and I have been searching by the river for a long time, but we haven't found any clay. Where exactly can we find clay? Or do we need specific tools to discover clay?

Clay looks like lumps of brown.... stuff. It's low to the ground so it can blend in. Clay doesn't not appear on the riverbank itself. it's a little ways away. From Sosogi, go directly south to the stream. Cross it and head up the hill to the first flat area. Moving east toward the bridge construction project, you'll see the clay on the ground, two separate patches. The first is medium and will require an iron pickaxe. The second, closer to the bridge project, is all small and can be gathered with a stone pickaxe.

There is also a bunch of small clay deposits closed to the first merchant south-east from Sosogi. Just follow the southern path from the rebuilt bridge.
