NPC Farming & Field Size Question
I'm looking for some guidance on how to farm efficiently -- and therefore feed my village efficiently.

I built one max size land field and one max sized water field (8x8, I think). This is where things began to get frustrating.

(1) I assigned one NPC to each field, working with a seed bag that I had purchased from a trader (cannot unlock leather for the bags until Dynasty Level 12, but by that point you should already have a large village in need of substantial food).

(2) To my disappointment, I learned that you can only plant one crop per field, no matter how large the field is. Putting down multiple smaller land and water fields of course requires that you commit additional villagers, which is not really possible in a village with 12-15 people.

(3) After choosing rice for the water field (because this is a Japanese staple after all so my village is GOING to make rice) and gobo for the land field, I watch my NPCs plant roughly 25% of the available farmland, less than 20 tiles. There appears to be no way to get them to progress beyond that. This is flawed. Either boost NPC production or don't let me build a field that large.

(4) Even that small area planted area produced a lot of gobo -- enough for many vegetable dishes-- so I was pleased. But my rice paddy produced something like 49-50 uncooked rice, and I know that each fish/meat dish takes 10 cooked rice to make. This feels totally out of balance. I should be able to farm huge amounts of rice in this game (and incidentally, the rice fields produce a ton of the byproduct to make sake, more than the actual rice -- also feels unbalanced).

Is anyone else finding NPC farming frustrating? TBH it doesn't feel like it's working and it makes large villages very hard to sustain.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi Morgenthau.

The problem is not new and has already been addressed that the balancing is not balanced and urgently needs to be improved.

See the following thread, where a lot has already been compiled on the subject of "balancing". We have no choice but to wait for the next update.

A 24 square rice field produces a lot of rice each season except Winter of course, for 1 worker.
You must be doing something wrong.

SD has a problem with fields >20 blocks. The villagers then only cultivate part of the field as long as there is seed in the bag. If the bag is empty, they stop planting. However, they do not fetch a new bag to finish planting the field. The problem is known and will be fixed with the next update.
Therefore, a new bag must be assigned after each season change. This also applies to other workstations such as wells.

I create my waterfields 5x5=25 what fits perfectly to the seedbag. Dryfields are 3x8=24, what is also fine. Before i get leather, I visit my seedvendor-friend and buy at least one bag of each kind I wanna plant. During winter I check, if there is every bag I will need in spring.
Not every seed is vended in every season, so plan in advance.

OK, I had the effect that the assigned pawn left half the field unworked if I had large fields > 20. I therefore left my field size below 20 and since then I've had no more problems.

Farming is a particular chore in SD and can be very confusing when it comes to NPC's doing it. Here's a simple breakdown.

The maximum sustainable field size, either land or water, is 25. So, a 5x5 square is, for the moment, the perfect size.
Seed bags last exactly 2 plantings. They won't break before the second planting is completed.
Farming unlocks at Dynasty Legend Level 9 or by purchasing blueprints from the Farming Trader. However, the tanning vat, which makes the leather required for Seed Bags, doesn't unlock until 11. You can purchase the tanning vat blueprint from the trader in the small work area in the south of Segi, just over the bridge away from the main village.
Each tile in a field produces an exact amount of crop. For a 5x5 field, I get 250 rice per planting. I haven't run the numbers for all the crops. Once you find out the numbers, you can plan accordingly.
Most recipes use *uncooked* rice. Narezushi and Sake both use cooked rice. You can see the difference when you look at the recipe. It is highly recommended to use only uncooked rice recipes until you have a significant population as cooked rice is insanely expensive in terms of material cost (10 uncooked rice per),
With daily production, you will need to devote a lot of labor to making seed bags. The leather cost is unnaturally high (4 leather per) so until you can make it yourself, you'll have to rely on the farming trader in Aratani for bags. His inventory is randomly selected so it may not always support your plans. It is best to ensure you have the ability to make leather before you expand farming beyond 1 or 2 simple crops.

Hi Morgenthau

Plan what you plant
What can be cooked?
What is in season?
Of those, what will give the most nett value, with the people available?
Simple, Solid or Excellent?

For instance, for my first season (spring), I have a forager gathering 1 slot Gobo and 2 slots garlic, which creates 3-4 Simple vegetable meals – enough for 3 people with left over Gobo that can be cooked on its own. Come summer, I can upscale this with one field Gobo and one field Garlic.

Note! Garlic can be foraged in the spring but planted only in Summer and Autumn

My forager then gathers Mushrooms for the Simple Fish Meal using Mushrooms.

Add a Millet field and you can cook Solid Meat Meals with the left-over garlic.

The left-over Gobo can be used in medicines or cook it for currency.

Rice = Sakiiiiii! Or later for some Excellent meals.

1 Rice field produces > 340 uncooked rice. Have you perhaps already queued the cooking with rice in the kitchen before the harvest? The 49-50 might have been left over after use?

NPC’s can plant 25 fields max at the moment. I think the 64 fields (8x8) is for self-planting or future expansion when NPC’s happiness and other tools will have an effect on their output.

You can plant multiple crops per field if you plant and harvest it yourself, you will need a hoe, bucket of fertiliser and a bucket of water and it takes at least 3 days to get to harvest ready.

As for leather, you can buy the recipes for tailoring and tanning in Segi – second season. PSSST it is fully refundable at the moment…….

1 seed bag can plant 50 fields thus it should last 2 days per NPC.

As a last note, just yesterday, I discovered the Sengoku Dynasty Official Guide that I got with the package deal in the beginning has also been updated with the latest information. Very helpful in planning all this.

You guys are all extremely helpful. I appreciate all the advice. This game is very good, on the cusp of being great. Once we sort out the balancing issues and maybe get the Dynasty screen to provide more information, things will improve.

Obvious observation is obvious, but a big reason a lot of us aren't seeing that is it's all in german or something >_>;; I mean go figure, hehe

Mucha pena y mucha rabia
