Can a villager acquire iron while working in a mining post regardless of its location?

No. It needs to have an iron mine within range, which means the town must have an iron mine within its boundaries.

This is incorrect. In order to mine iron using your mining post, it must be within a village that has an ore processing station special project inside the village bell's radius. However, that mechanic is currently bugged and does not function (any assigned villager is dropped from the job and any tools assigned are simply lost). It's being worked on but, for now, you need to mine iron manually.
