One thing to note about villager happiness, if you just give them the minimum amount of food, water, maintenance, health, etc. that they ask for (Never moving the slider over to give more materials), they will never be happy. They show up to your village neutral and they will stay that way or get worse unless you give them More than their basic needs.
How it works:
Not meeting a Need and running out of stock during season change = -2 penalty to happiness.
Meeting a Need at the base (orange) level = No change to happiness.
Meeting a Need at the optimal (green) level = +1 bonus to happiness.
Currently, 1 point of happiness modifier = 5%
Each Need is calculated separately so you can fail to meet a need (-2 penalty) and off-set that with meeting 2 Needs at optimal (green). The 2 +1 bonuses counter the -2 penalty.
the cog symbol is i think grain stalk or flower so maybe farmer/forager or cook
If all your villagers are already happy, then there is no reason to set them to green, and you will just waste resources. If they are content or lower, you can set one or more of them to green to raise the happiness level of the villagers.
