I'm a fan of MV's and while this game features a lot of good things like great exploration, graphics and such, the pacing feels a bit odd, I've explored a lot of areas, defeated a lot of bosses, and somewhat It feels like I haven't progressed anything (Looks like all the achievements are for late game, because I've just unlocked 3 in 20h)
Is just about expectations from people, for me is still a worth game to play, but I understand why people have mixed feelings ( Especially If you already played the best of the best of the genre)
First is the big map yet no fast travel. Well, it used to be like that, but now it's now relegated to a consumable which you have to constantly stock up on. It doesn't cost too much, but still annoying and can drain your savings if you buy in bulk. It also only fast travel you to the big save points, so you'll be doing a lot of backtracking.
Second is the biggest complaint, which is contact damage. I don't have a problem with it, people should just git gud. However, a lot of your special weapon moves pushes you forward, meaning you'll likely just ram into the enemy doing a special attack, making them virtually useless most of the time.
Third is the fog sections (haven't seen many complain about it though) which have your screen covered by a purple fog. It's annoying and doesn't add anything into the game. All it does is forcing you to eat a specific food or equip a charm that gets rid of it.
Finally, the story is kind of a mess. It's plagued with jargon and word salads, making it really hard to follow. Honestly, it's so incomprehensible that it's best you just ignore it and just enjoy the world design and make it up in your head.
All in all, this game is divided between people saying it's one of the worst metroidvania and people who say it's the best one. I enjoyed it, even took the time to (almost) 100% it, which is more than I could say about other metroidvania.
Hell, from what I remember, this is one of the few that actually gives you i-frame dash (though only unlocked late game).
people who had skipped it tried it.
this game is not fitting for new generation of gamers.
it has barely any handholding
like makes you read questlines to see where to go, dont use the mapmarkers on maps and get confused and metroidvania in general is a niche genre
like the crybabies about contact damage, they dont understand basic gamedesign and how the combat is build.
they are hypocrites, blaming their lack of patience and skill towards the game. they have also no knowledge about anything, they just say it adds nothing and is oldschool. you cannot argue with them, like you cannot argue with people on twitter. they have no realistic argument and dont accept logic.
alot of people getting this for "free" which is not a mainstream game = alot of people will cry, compared to the target audience.
its not flawless, but for majority of gamers, it doesnt have enough handholding to be enjoyable.
everyone has different taste and i understand not liking this game.
now days people dont accept a game for what it is, they demand it to be like they wish.
maybe devs should add a TAS-run that plays the game automatic so they can watch
There also just doesn't feel like there's much else to do once you hit level 99.
That said, the game is pretty. It is absolutely eye candy.
The price this going for, means that this is one of the best buys you could ever make.
100% BUY
Don't play it for the story; it's not really conveyed very well.
What people like in MVs obviously varies from person to person. Some hate contact damage, others feel lost and frustrated when there's unguided, open exploration; but for me this game hit everything I like the way I like it.
To anyone considering buying, I say give it a shot and refund if you don't enjoy it. And to those it clicks with, dagger + scythe combo FTW.
-_-
Afterimage is the second best modern souls-like metroidvania after hollow knight, while being better than HK in most areas.
People should git good -_-
