I guess it depends on what you like most in MVs but while it's on sale, it's an easy recommend.
Fiiiine. I'll believe you. New game +?
It looks good, but its a really scattered experience,
It was one of the rare Metroidvanias that surprised me. When I started the game I thought it was a game as a few simple regions and a few mobs wandering around. However, at this point, I honestly did not expect it to be a game with as many diverse mobs and regions as HK. The last time I experienced this kind of feeling was while playing Aeterna Noctis. I can recommend this game to metroidvania lovers as a hidden gem too.
The controls are lofty yet tight enough. The music and sound production are excellent. I like gritty, dark games so The Last Faith and Blasphemous 1 were my favs, but Afterimage has a lot of variety and themes in its levels. It's a great game and all the weapons are fun to use, Pretty SOLID.
And have fun with contact damage and dodge has no i-frames and often no means to avoid damage other than to eat it.
Devs have not understood what makes a good metroid-vania at all.
While i can agree it can be hard to parse what to do and where to go sometimes, it's not that bad. You just gotta pay attention to the dialogue and read the quest descriptions as they update.
Also not sure why contact damage is a bad thing? And once you upgrade your dash you can dodge pretty much any damage if you get your timing down. Feels satisfying.
But to the OP topic, I'd say it's a SOLID 8.5/10. It reminds me of a mixture of Bloodstained, Hollow Knight, and Dust: An Elysian Tale (which is another highly under rated game in the genre). If it wasn't quite so hard to parse what to do sometimes i would give it a 9 easily. The combat is great and snappy with variety and world is pretty huge and varied. It's a great game all in all.
That you might unlock an invincible dash in post game or in ng+ is irrelevant if you don't have it for the actual majority of the game.
Weapon skills also have animation lock, making them feel super bad. The input for some skills is also awful.
