1set : Greatsword + Whip
Greatsword is here mainly for defense. There is one that give you +10 def after full upgrade. Greatsword also has the best defensive ability which is Iron Bastion and you can even get it early. It's a counter ability that can block most of damages from enemy if you time it right. If you master it, it'll help you in your fight against many boss that like to throw gazillions attacks that hard to dodge. Whip will be you main attack because its range and its Jump attack that is really good against flying enemy that hard to get close.
2set : Scythe + Whip
Since in set 1 both Greatsword and Whip both have slow attack. Some people may find hard to travel around the world as it take time to clear the path. So, 2nd set you can pick Scythe as middle ground. It has good attack speed, average DPS. You still can swap to +10 def Greatsword just to use its stat against tough enemy/boss
*** Basic spacing is using dash as animation canceling. So, when you saw enemy get hit by your attack, don't wait until animation is finish, dash out of enemy range immediately to avoid getting return hit.
*** How do you know what kind of weapon you have? look at its description. If it say Blade attack +XXX, then it is blade type and not sword.
*** I recommend to stick to 2 weapons for beginner and reserve your talent points for other +status as you won't have enough points to fully upgrade status talent + additional weapons until you hit late game. After, lv70+ you can now begin to experiment with other weapon. However, if you know exactly what talents you should have at which level, you can have 3-4 weapons at early game because because some weapons are good against some boss.
For the late game Dualblades + Scythe is the way to go if you want to melt the end game bosses. There are several Youtube videos that can show you the method by combining both of their respective spinning attacks.
At level 99 I had the entire Talent Tree filled out with 15+ spare points. That's assuming you 100% all of the maps. But, as AminoAcid pointed out you're far better off upgrading your stats and 2 core weapons.
Whip note: The whip is super useful for flying enemies due to its aerial attack that creates a small AOE around you. This is not a skill you need to buy. It takes some practice to get the timing right since enemies love to crash into you. The further they are on the outside of the attack the higher the damage.
