Lost on where to go next

After going back to Scorchwhere and beating a new boss and only getting a lousy whip out of it, I'm now at my wit's end on how to progress. Every path remaining to me seems to be blocked by one way gates, the shaking floor tiles that I can't break yet, water, or insurmountable walls. I feel like I must have somehow completely missed some mid-game area that would offer a power up for one of these things. I'm currently at level 62.

Can someone point me towards where I should be looking?

The ground smash is probably your next skill, and is found in the forest foregone. Use the portal the giant headed doll in the middle of the whispering forest sets up for you to take you there. Alternatively in the same whispering forest is the wall jump ability, which you should already have. If not, teleport to the whispering forest and head for the bottom right of that area for a boss fight.

Well, I don't have either of those abilities. I can't find anything in the Whispering Forest that resembles a giant doll; at best there's a giant eye, but no way to interact with it. Here's my map of those areas: https://i.imgur.com/SqeJ3Xj.jpg

Your way forward is super easy. In the bottom-left area of the map you wrote "Can't jump through raised holes" there is a giant eye. To the left is a plant switch you can hit that will open up a platform you can use to slide to the next section of the area. Your next boss is called "Failure" and provides you with the wall jump. From there you'll gain access to Mediator 00, the portal to the back half of Forest Foregone, and the ground slam ability. Continuing through Silent Coast > Field of Hydro will grant you the diving ability.

Oh hell, I was in the same position, I finished tower + sky and also ash + pyro and didn't yet have the ground slam xD

My bad was doing whispering forest, talking to the robot but not noticing the teleporter, even though I paid attention to what she said and she mentioned the teleporter (I guess I was just too much to the left of the screen and didn't see it activate, then continued on the left)
