I think the primary obstacle for making charcoal indoors is that traditional charcoal "kilns" are large and extremely messy; basically just pits covered by mounds of dirt or clay that you have to dig away and sift through to get the charcoal out. I don't think the charcoal-making itself is all that dangerous in terms of CO2 or CO produced; after all, the entire point of making charcoal is that you're trying to leave as much of the carbon in place as possible.
On the other hand, burning the resulting charcoal in a small, tightly closed room can lead to dangerous gas buildup.
i think air quality could be an interesting aspect of the game. Maybe windows/vents could help with that.
Maybe the walls/roofs could be more or less airtight. Like it's a difference if i build a wall just by stacking branches or if i close any holes in the walls with clay.
yeah and the kitchen should even reduce pollution much more because the fire is very "closed" and not so "open" like a campfire. But it's still fire that consumes o2.
Chimneys could be really helpulf with this, too. I like the idea of this very much
aah the chimney idea got me hooked. :D
In the beginning you can decide whether you put your fireplace inside our outside.
If you put it inside:
+ you can increase temperature
- you will pollute the air in the room and need to keep an eye on it - otherwise your clanfolk will get sick
you can toggle both at first with vents (which will lead to higher ressource costs due to the temperature loss), later in the game you can build a chimney which will just lead to clean air but you won't lose any temperature.
