Outcast Mother Questions (Testing Branch)
How long does she and her child stay? Her child is now a juvenile and starting working/getting paid.

Is she married? Can she be married?

How do you get rid of them, if you don't want them?

First time I had an outcast I got another messenger from some clan who wanted the kid back and presumably her as well. But I haven't has such a message with this 2nd outcast mother.

They will stay as long as their Satisfaction remains positive and you have enough money to pay them. She is not married and can be married to an eligible bachelor from the clan. Outcast mothers are essentially day workers. If you don't want them to stay any more, click on them and select 'Ask to Leave' from the interface. If you want the mother to stay but not the child, you can ask the child to leave once they become an adult. Messages from husbands arrive occasionally, but quite rarely. You can sometimes keep an outcast and child for ages before a message arrives. Message frequency seems rarer than outcast arrival frequency.

Do they come on specific days or is it random?
sbhink805 Dec 5, 2023 @ 4:29pm
I'm not sure, seems random, but I've only had 3 come so far and haven't paid attention.

I was thinking it was random too although all mine have come in the spring so far.

Then can come every 40 days. Meaning starting in Summer spring year 2 is the First time they can come.
So from day 40 on the Chance increases that they will Spawn until they do and the 40 days timer resets

In my experience, it's every 40+x days, where x could be anything from 0 to 10 or so. In my first play-through, my first outcast pitched up on day 1 of Spring. In my second play-through, the first outcast only arrived on day 8 of Spring. I continued that same play-through and due to the +x factor, I now have outcasts arriving in Fall complete with winter woolies. Every year, they arrived slightly later.

You can also try to force it by reloading the Sunrise auto-save. So if you want an outcast to arrive early in Spring and they don't, reload the Sunrise auto-save from that day and it will re-roll the chance of them arriving. You can also do the opposite. If an outcast arrives too early for your liking, you can reload the auto-save and the roll chance might fail. In which case, she may not arrive for another day or three until the roll chance succeeds.

Hi, I just pushed some new changes to the Outcast Mother today to the Testing Branch and will answer a few questions here too.

So when the Outcast Mother arrives the first time she is pregnant.

Allow Her To stay
  • She will be a permanent free worker out of gratitude
  • Eventually once her satisfaction is high enough and there is a partner available she can join the clan.
  • If the baby is born before or after the joining it is adopted
  • Once the baby grows up, it can also Join the Clan, even if the mother did not Join
  • The Free Worker Mother can be told to leave the Clan with the Eject button. If the Baby is not grown up, it will also leave. If the Baby has become and adult, they will stay if the mother leaves.
  • After the "Desperate Need" Affliction wears off, the Mom and Baby may leave if their satisfaction gets low. They keep the Grateful affliction which makes it easier to keep the satisfaction up.
  • Allowing the mother to stay can also trigger another story event in the future. (min 12 days in the future)

Turn Her Away
  • She will leave the map
  • 12+ Days later she will return with a new Baby in tow (baby was born)
  • Given three options to let her stay overnight, become a discount worker, or turn her away again.
  • Overnight stay, and Second turn away will now trigger new story elements as well.
  • These are surprises.

I plan to continue to grow this story chain and provide alternate routes as to what can happen. Right now it is still mostly test cases, but it is becoming quite interesting.

Question about the permanent free worker part, is that only the first one that arrives? Subsequent outcast mothers will charge?

I've only had pregnant Mothers arrive.

So far, for me in year 4, I had 3 outcast mothers.

First one showed up, had her baby, got a message from her clan that they wanted the baby and her, I think. I allowed her to stay. Some days later she left with her baby.

Second one, same thing, only she never leaves.

Third outcast mother shows up I let here stay and I ask #2 to leave as she now costs me 66c a day and her kid I believe was a juvenile at that point and left with her.

Hi, every Outcast mother who is accepted should be a free worker permanently. I had this timed recently, but there were some very good arguments against that. I also want her to be kept around for future story elements.

After a while the mothers may leave if their satisfaction is low and the baby is born (once the desperate need affliction is gone) This is likely what happened.

If a mother or baby is told to leave they will both leave together until the baby is an adult.

On the previous version, the free worker affliction wore off over time and that is likely what happened here and why she wanted to be paid.

How can I tell how high the satisfaction score is for the outcast mother? With workers we can watch the count go up and down, but my current one doesn't have a count.

I think he removed it and made satisfaction permanent.

I accepted one outcast mother. A season or so later, after the baby was born, a man from her previous clan showed up demanding her back. She was afraid of him so I kept her and the baby and sent him away. Her kid is a juvenile now, but I haven't seen the option to adopt either the first outcast mother or her son even though their satisfaction is high.

I've just accepted a second outcast mother. No story events for her yet.

I had a custom start, where I began the run with two juvenile girls and their dog. I got husbands for both starters once they became adults in the usual way, by hiring workers. I'd been hoping to marry the outcast mother's kid to one of my clanmember's kids. But so far, all boys, so no luck there. Maybe subsequent children will let me match them up.

I really like this story event and the messenger system! I'm looking forward to more events being added.

You don't 'adopt' either mother or child, they must marry into the clan like a Worker; have an available adult male to marry the mother, or have a child of relatively similar age range who can marry the outcast child when they are both adults. Blorf used the word 'Join' with a capital J, but that just means 'marry in like a Worker.' There's not an 'adopt in' option, as such.

Thank you, that makes sense! I really wish there was an adoption option, but I'm glad to know this is working as expected.
