Arx Fatalis

Arx Fatalis

Is this a good RPG?
I love RPG games like this, and have been looking for a new one to play. I've beaten Skyrim a few times, and I'd like to play around some more, but this computer doesn't really agree with it.
Anyway, seeing as this is only $5, and the story seems good, is it?
Is this an open world game, dungeon crawler, etc? I looked at some screenshots, and it looks like it may be a game of exploration.

Well, to be fair, I you think Skyrim is a complex RPG, than you may need a week or two to wrap your head around the gameplay and controlls alone.
It is a good game, and even looks quite well for it's age. It's basically a first person dungeon crawler with less item/level grind and more story/exploration in mind. Something like TES:III placed in Diablo2 or along those lines. Pretty explorative with a kinda open world... that consists entirely of underground tunnels, halls, fortresses and caves.
It has some of the control-issues that older RPGs like SystemShock2, Gothic or Morrowind had though. There's your inventory-mode, chant-magic-mode, combat-mode, and casuel-walky-talky mode, some of the interfaces aren't really streamlined or self-explanatory and working out how to brew a potion did literally cost me 10 minutes. It's a bit bug-ish here and there too, random crashes are currently kicking my mood to play this game, gotta look for a patch before I ruin my save-files. Though you practically can't mess it up story-wise. I heard the game actually gives you the option of killing every living thing you encounter and still beat the game ( idk if that is completely true though, but it works to a further extent, as I have experienced myself).
I think it's well worth the five bucks, but that depends on your taste really. It's definitly not as easy to pick up and play as Skyrim, or any of the modern-gen console rpg's.
If you would like a very similar game to ArxFatalis if just slightly faster, linearer, more streamlined gameplay/interface-wise, and built in a modern-gen engine I would also heartily recommend 'Dark Messiah' (also here on steam for around 5-10 bucks).
I you have the heart for old-school RPGs and don't mind the crinkles of age on this piece, give it a shot!

I wouldn't call Skyrim a complex RPG, it was very easy to figure out the controls and how to do things. The only complex part about it was trying to get it to work.
Though I don't mind linear gameplay, I would prefer a game with more open gameplay. I don't care about graphics, but a story line is a huge factor for me.
Since it is amd older game, I do expect problems, but I guess for five bucks you can't really go wrong.

One of the best i've played personally. My only complaint was it's short, and a few bugs still around, but the Arx Libertatis team has done a great job in dealing with most of them.

This game is well worth the money, although it is linear and at times seems the graphics hurt your eyes (easy enough to adjust to after an hour of play just keep in mind). I played this when it came out on Disk in 2002 along with Morrowind and found this to be a somewhat superior game in terms of what your character can do with the world around him, especially when it comes to crafting, spells and of course the food/potion system. However it has drawbacks, many of which revolve around near end game content, but thats what walkthroughs are for. I actually loved this game so much I converted the whole concept into a Dungeons and Dragons campaign that was successful with my group!
Anyway, it's fun, good story, definately challenging if you don't know what needs to be done and lots of little secrets and caches and goodies to keep you searching hoping to find something to give an edge (which you do very often especially in the first hour or so of the game) It's worth the money, I plan on getting the Steam version only because my disk is fried and it would be patched.

IMHO, Arx has got to be one of the greatest games of all times -- along with Underworld, Elite (BBC), Sniper Elite, C&C, Oblivion... Considering that Arx was launched in 2002, it is unbelievable.

I don't include Skyrim in the list of my favourite games. It's no 'better' than its predecessor, Oblivion; it's just bigger and it's had more money thrown at it. I really enjoyed Skyrim, but I can't say that the enjoyment that I got from it exceeded that that I got from Underworld or Oblivion.

When I recently revisited Arx, it crashed constantly, even with the latest patches (under Win7). I got it reasonably stable by running the .exe file in XP mode (latest XP service pack option, which limits screen resolution severely). I had to run the game in 'administrator' mode too, otherwise, the saved games wouldn't save.

Then I found Arx Liberatis. Since then, I've played the game through a good few more times at the highest quality video settings. Just one crash, while fighting two liches and a zombie thingie after casting a 'harm' and two fireballs. Liberatis is a labour of love as far as I can see and if so, kudos to the team.

At first, I went through the game twice as a fighter. I found it almost impossible to get my head round casting spells again. Mice aren't designed for drawing straight lines! Then it dawned on me! I won't spoil it for you, just in case you decide to give the game a try. Cheers

this is one of my favoourite rpg, togheter with Gothic 1 and 2, morrowind..far better then today AAA titles like oblivion or skyrim..that's for sure..unfortunally the spell system is very hard to learn..using mouse gesture to cast spell is difficult...but great game!ad Dark messiah of a Might and magic from same great Devs ; Arkane studios

I remember the map interface pretty much sucking on the OG Xbox. The game was a lot of fun, but I remember getting frustrated with not really ebing able to figure out where I was at times. Then again, that was also like 10+ years ago, so maybe I just wasnt as good a gamer back then. I played this and Morrowind around the same time, and this one ended up losing out to Morrowind because of my getting lost too easily, and I just never came back to the game. Still, I also remember wishing I had finished Arx Fatalis. So, I'm curious if the game was improved at all since then.
