It is a good game, and even looks quite well for it's age. It's basically a first person dungeon crawler with less item/level grind and more story/exploration in mind. Something like TES:III placed in Diablo2 or along those lines. Pretty explorative with a kinda open world... that consists entirely of underground tunnels, halls, fortresses and caves.
It has some of the control-issues that older RPGs like SystemShock2, Gothic or Morrowind had though. There's your inventory-mode, chant-magic-mode, combat-mode, and casuel-walky-talky mode, some of the interfaces aren't really streamlined or self-explanatory and working out how to brew a potion did literally cost me 10 minutes. It's a bit bug-ish here and there too, random crashes are currently kicking my mood to play this game, gotta look for a patch before I ruin my save-files. Though you practically can't mess it up story-wise. I heard the game actually gives you the option of killing every living thing you encounter and still beat the game ( idk if that is completely true though, but it works to a further extent, as I have experienced myself).
I think it's well worth the five bucks, but that depends on your taste really. It's definitly not as easy to pick up and play as Skyrim, or any of the modern-gen console rpg's.
If you would like a very similar game to ArxFatalis if just slightly faster, linearer, more streamlined gameplay/interface-wise, and built in a modern-gen engine I would also heartily recommend 'Dark Messiah' (also here on steam for around 5-10 bucks).
I you have the heart for old-school RPGs and don't mind the crinkles of age on this piece, give it a shot!
Though I don't mind linear gameplay, I would prefer a game with more open gameplay. I don't care about graphics, but a story line is a huge factor for me.
Since it is amd older game, I do expect problems, but I guess for five bucks you can't really go wrong.
Anyway, it's fun, good story, definately challenging if you don't know what needs to be done and lots of little secrets and caches and goodies to keep you searching hoping to find something to give an edge (which you do very often especially in the first hour or so of the game) It's worth the money, I plan on getting the Steam version only because my disk is fried and it would be patched.
I don't include Skyrim in the list of my favourite games. It's no 'better' than its predecessor, Oblivion; it's just bigger and it's had more money thrown at it. I really enjoyed Skyrim, but I can't say that the enjoyment that I got from it exceeded that that I got from Underworld or Oblivion.
When I recently revisited Arx, it crashed constantly, even with the latest patches (under Win7). I got it reasonably stable by running the .exe file in XP mode (latest XP service pack option, which limits screen resolution severely). I had to run the game in 'administrator' mode too, otherwise, the saved games wouldn't save.
Then I found Arx Liberatis. Since then, I've played the game through a good few more times at the highest quality video settings. Just one crash, while fighting two liches and a zombie thingie after casting a 'harm' and two fireballs. Liberatis is a labour of love as far as I can see and if so, kudos to the team.
At first, I went through the game twice as a fighter. I found it almost impossible to get my head round casting spells again. Mice aren't designed for drawing straight lines! Then it dawned on me! I won't spoil it for you, just in case you decide to give the game a try. Cheers
