Without magic, it cannot accelerate. Then you will fight with him in close combat. Or, I recommend, just go through the back door, through the Goblin prison.
There is always a way.
The mana cost is too high, the damage done is low. If he doesn't know how to dodge blows, he will die.
If the player is not a Mage, he is not required to collect runes. It is likely that he does not have them. The strongest damage dealt is in melee. So you need to turn off the Ylside magic in the room where the magic does not work, and fight them on your own terms. Again, if you can't win in the room, then it's better to return to later levels. I recommend raising your Armor Class to + -100 points, then you can survive.
If you created a character that is not able to win in melee or absorb damage, as well as pumped in the skills of mechanics, craft, stealth, etc. - a useless waste of points for Warrior.
But the overall trick is like you wrote to fight them while they have no magic. Then they are really easy. Or you can lure them to a non-magic area but there are many occassion where there is no no-magic area nearby. So he has to learn to deal with Ylsides without luring them anywhere. And usually I just waited until they have no mana anymore and become slow. Then you attack until their mana regenerates and you have to dodge.
I dont see how a non-magic character can kill an Ylside without dodging. He has to learn to run away effectively if he is not a magic-user.
You can win this game even as a thief without any points in magic or melee, though. Yes its way easier as magician or as a fighter. But still its absolutely valid playing thief.
You can also win the end fight with fists only. It just takes a lot of time.
I saw some videos in YouTube and noticed that players who focused on magic skills had it way easier.
On my next run I'll try to get the three pieces of mithril armor.
