As soon as I confirm the resolution I get an error message "Unable to create Direct3DDevice object. Your 3D hardware chipset may not support rendering in the current display mode. Switch to software rasterizer",

What does it mean? How to software "rasterizer"?
Can the game run in window mode?

The original unmodded game doesn't support that large of a screen, plus if it would the UI would still be not properly scaled so you have to install the unofficial patch, which changes the renderer from directx 7 to opengl and adds support to all modern resolutions. The patch is called Arx Libertatis and windows defender or an antivirus software will probably false-detect it for being malicious, but that's a whole different topic.
