Can't find troll idol

I'm in the Goblin castle, I used wine on an apple pie in the kings bedroom and used it on the door to his throne room, he left to use the toilet while I used the code to open his secret stash but there's no idol in there, just a note. In a Goblin's bedroom I found "a little metal key" under a pillow. I've tried the key in every locked chest and door there is, including the treasure room with all the coins, and it doesn't open anything.

I did that already, if I try to speak to him again he tells me to leave him alone. Downstairs in the room in the guide nothing happens and the key from under the pillow doesn't work in the door there. I think it's bugged and game ending since I foolishly only have the one quick save.

Ooh, looks I did things out of order. I hadn't spoken to the right guard! Sorted now :)
