Advanced spells don't actually require Casting skill?
Hey all, I'm well into my first playthrough of this game and something seems very fishy.

My character's Casting skill is at 36, and yet I've been using Fire Field, Invisibility, and Incinerate without issue for about as long as I've had the runes for them. These spells are from levels 7, 8, and 9, which means I ideally shouldn't be able to cast them until I have 70, 80, or 90 points in Casting as per the manual. The only spells that have ever given me trouble are Mass Incinerate (probably just needs more mana than I have) and Dispel Field. Everything else just works with 36 in Casting.

I'm playing with Arx Libertatis, and I can't tell if this is a bug in that project or in the base game. Googling has been utterly fruitless so I'd appreciate it if anyone could describe their own experience with the spell level system or otherwise help shed light on this.

So after playing around without Libertatis for a while, I'm pretty sure it's just a coincidence that there are 10 spellbook pages and 10 levels of spell casting. As in, high Casting skill just gives you increasingly better versions of whatever spell you cast (magic missile gains more projectiles, for example).

ah, that makes sense; 4 years later and now i know why lol

I think the only point on a spell being level 1 (like Ignite) or level 10 (like Time Stop) is the mana cost.
The actual power of a spell will depend of your casting power, if you're the one drawing the runes. The alternative is using a scroll: then the power of the spell will depend on the color of the scroll.

WHAT? The color of the scroll determines its power?? Bloody hell this game has a lot of unclear things about it

I know it's been almost a month, but I would like to point out that from your Library page in Steam, you can get to the snazzy MANUAL that comes with this game. It contains quite a bit of useful information, including the color code for the scrolls, stats for weapons and gear, many rune combinations, etc. ;)
