Doom had sequel when John Romero left ID Software :)
From what I got from the interviews, Colantonio was one of the few developers at Arkane who wanted to make a sequel.
Now people think RPGs are just action adventures.
Maybe he want to make remake in his new studio.
Colantonio said he wanted to take a break from development. I hope he's not completely out of the business. Pretty sure he's not gonna rejoin Zenimax, but maybe he'll join another team or create his own sometime? We'll see.
Honestly, if there is gonna be a game similar to Arx, then I don't care if it's called Arx, or even if it's in the same universe. I'd take a solid RPG inspired by Arx over some publisher-controlled direct sequel anyday.
We already got a sequel, it just happens to have a different world setting.
Also, the Dishonored series has become the spiritual successors of arx fatalis.
Some companies make the same game over and over and just get better at it, this is one of those companies. It would be cool for them to revisit the same world, but it's no necessary imo. As long as the overall style of their game design is retained.
The only things Arx and Dark Messiah have in common is that they're first person RPGs. Nothing about them is remotely similar in terms of mechanics, story, or world building.
That's what I was afraid of.
Dishonored 2 was a request from fans and Arkane had a desire to do the sequel, finally Bethesda trusted and gave them the green light, due to the success of the first game.
Originally Prey wasn't a forced reboot or sequel, It was developed with the intention of being a new IP and something original (The strongest influences according to Raphael Colantonio were System Shock and the very same Arx Fatalis). With an advanced development and when bethesda supervised the game, so to speak, the company ordered them use the IP of Prey (Maybe because Bethesda knew that there was a lot of risk and with that name, at least they'd sell a little more).
Finally about the sequel, I am 90% sure of not seeing it, Raphael (Arx Fatalis creator and president of the company), resigned from his company Arkane a while ago, he mentioned that the video game industry and market has changed and he doesn't feel identified or comfortable with the games that they have been developing lately, he feels out of place.
Ultima Underworld and Arx Fatalis are the significant games for Raf, but perhaps the impossibility of doing the sequel, or the inability to make games with the freedom that he wants, led him to resign as well as taking his rest. In Prey we can see a great influence from Arx even a lot of tributes and easter eggs (very special ones and not everyone does), they call it the space dungeon, maybe this is the biggest proof of it...
