How to mimic the "Who's Lila" art style
Hi!
I don't know if the title is clear, but I really love the art style of the game and I'm curious if any of you know how to edit a photo of someone to mimic the game portraits, either by using a filter or a photo editor or anything else.
I'd appreciate any tips, thanks in advance!

From what I can gather, they used something called "dithering" I think? Tried it on photopea and it produces a pretty similar result

Thank you so much!! I didn't know it was called dithering and I found it can be pretty easily replicated even using online tools like https://ditherit.com . If anyone wants to try it out I used "Bayer (Ordered)" In the dither mode, and made a pallete with a reddish black and a slightly milky white. I also greatly lowered the resolution of the image. for the colors, a low-color "posterize" effect might produce the desired results.

Photoshop has this little option in "export" "save for web (old)" something like this. You can make all beautiful dither pictures there

OK so I've done something similar in the past. What you want to do is take an image and convert it to a 1-bit colour pallet. IMO the best software for this is GIMP because it has some fairly easy to use colour indexing tools and few different types of colour dithering. What I do is open GIMP, select Image > Mode > Indexed, and select the colour dithering options you want.

The whole "ditherpunk" effect works best with low-resolution images since that's what the colour dithering algorithms were designed for. Modern cameras weren't designed to have their photos converted into 1-bit graphics so it's worth messing around with stuff like brightness/contrast and resolution to work out what looks best.

I've been able to convert a few minutes of video into 1-bit by running the individual frames through GIMP with a help of a couple plugins. Someone smarter than me probably knows an easier way to do it.

shouldent be too hard in most modern video editors. while i dont think a dithering tool comes stock, you can either emulate the effect by combining other effects, or simply write up a dithering plugin.

i say the latter like it's simple, but it is not.

Yeah there's no reason why someone couldn't make a plugin to filter video into 1-bit graphics. Use of colour indexing is pretty niche because modern PCs have moved way past needing limited colour depth, which is why there's not many convenient tools for colour dithering.

You can get a similar look by using posterize on top of other effects, but IMO it doesn't look as good. You won't get authentic colour dithering unless you use a dithering algorithm to sort the colour/shading.

I recall seeing some old DOS/ Mac games that looked a bit like this...

I can confirm that this method works great
