Old splines = classic branch?
Hi all,
I've seen quite a few very good maps and own one myself that works decently well with the old spline system. To keep access to those maps, and rework them further I'd like to suggest the following: The actual public branch should be converted into an unsupported "Classic branch" as it is as soon as the spline update comes life. So the developper can fully concentrate on the new spline system and every player can choose to keep and work the old map, convert it to the new system or have seperate maps for each.
What are you all thinking about the idea?

I have started to convert my map to the new splines in beta, but I absolutely don't like the look of it. I'd prefer to keep my old style map with old style tracks and old style creative ideas and solutions. Of course I wouldn't mind some minor bug fixes (class 70 vs. 90° crossing, red hairline boxes), but on my map I really don't need them fixed.

Would it be feasible to keep a working old spline game under betas as for example "Classic branch, unsupported" to keep the look and feel of the game as it is now? I'd really love the opportunity to delve into nostalgia from time to time...

I won't use it, but it seems a good idea to me. +1

I'm happy with 'Classic' please don't take it away.

I agree. I like the the old system as it takes skill.

I liked the old way better , after the long long video watching on how to make it pretty, now you have new cars, to me lacking , i liked the old way better.

I have been playing this game since Nov 2021 and decided to start new legacy spline map from scratch. (Betsy, no money, one flat car) The new splines are nice but you cannot run trains, so there is no alternative but to use the old splines.

and with what happened on discord the game is likely to stay as it is anyway.

As I understood the performance problems with mp are coming from the tracks being physics objects and the interaction of vehicles with the track has to be recalculated every so often to achieve good tracking results. For any vehicle on track that is, since you can't know which player's where on the map. More powerful hardware may overcome this problem by sheer power sometime in the future (hence my suggestion to keep it as a classic branch)

Inspired by your videos (k10wn) I started to convert my map into beta track. Yes, it's really nice to build and Tetsy runs nice. But I don't like the look of the new track, encountered a lot of problems with getting stuck (when the old groundwork is removed, until then it's just fine) and a few limitations with bridges (no wooden deck as of now and I can't place steel bridges without pillars any more).

Thank you for this piece of insight. I am not that deep into the games' inner workings. I only figured that over 140 pcs of rolling stock (engines included) wasn't feasible in multiplayer and then read in the forum that this was most probably due to physics calculations.

We tried to change the hosting system but that didn't work out. So I reduced the car count to about 100 and engines to 10 (handcart included). That works reasonably well for us. The player I play with regularly and myself we both have 100mbit upload and 40mbit download with a ingame ping indication of 18-20. With that low a car count it even doesn't matter if another client joins into the game.

At the refinery I never encountered any other problems than colliding barrels if I try to go too fast with manipulating the gate. But I reached the refinery late, as I evolved my network from industry to industry. Most likely I than already had thinned out the rolling stock. But I try to make the suggested test sometimes soon (the editing part will be the rolling stock though, as my loading dock is cramped with barrels, I am currently just filling all industries as there's not much use for money)
