Tender Coal
i love this update and the coal locomotive's are awesome and i have tried to highlight the tender etc or see if it has a window but nothing i do know the wood tender's when you take each log it disappear's and i not one for asking question's or if it will be added later but my question is this

Question: will the coal tender's have the option of the coal pile shrinking or display how much coal is left on it i have noticed i have not filled it with coal since we had them and wondering if future plan's will be coming to improve this?

I think I read a post where someone said there are several thousand shovel loads of coal in the tender so if that is the case with the rate the loco's use fuel it will take a while to get through a tender load :)

just a question really it be cool if the pile highlight's or something or goes down when you use it hoping it would give the guy's some idea's maybe :) but would be cool to see the pile going down on each shovel load lol :)

ok no worry's mate thank's for all imput :) just something i thought throwing out there if it help's anyone also or might answer people's question's

to carry this on the coaltower provides 1000 shovel per cube (or unit) that makes 1 hopper run a loco for 1000 h / 2000h / 4000 h on difficult / normal / easy.
Think the towers are decorative, really in use will be very few or one for no funds and experience on deliverance ;)

I was wondering some of the same things. I wanted to experiment with the coal tower, to see how much coal it delivered. It seems you can pull the chute down and then it automatically retracts. How much comes out per dump? I figured I would need to at least partially empty my tender before adding coal to it, so I tried just shoveling it out and dumping the coal on the ground. After several hundred shovel loads I gave up. There is no visual indication that the coal level in the tender has gone down at all. How are we supposed to know when it is time to head for a coal tower and reload? Has anyone actually managed to load coal from the tower into a tender yet? Has anyone emptied a tender enough to see any visual change in the coal level? As someone here said, the tenders seem to hold so much coal that it is unlikely you will ever need to stop at a coal tower.

1200 hours? maybe rebalening the burn rate for wood and coal may not be a good idea.

You can see a little bit of the bottom of the tender when its empty, similar to the coal cars when empty.
And yes, most of us will drive the coal fired trains without ever refilling them, for new locos (with filled tenders) will be introduced before the tenders are used to the bottom.
Filling the tender of the 2-8-0 will take 6 coal "cubes" which is the same as 6000 shovels.
Direct loading a tender is also possible at the coal mine, car to tender loading did not work.

Ha! I was wondering if you could fill a tender directly from the coal mine. The other thing I was wondering was if you could fill a hopper from a coal tower. Not that there's much reason to ever do that, but in theory it should work. I suppose in theory you should also be able to take a shovelful of coal from a hopper and throw it into your firebox. But that would require tracking hopper level at "shovel" granularity instead of "cube" granularity; not hard but not really worth it either...

filling hoppers from coal tower is possible. the function is for me slightly more userfriendly. It works like an on off function when clicking, no drag necessary. It slides automatically back if tower is empty, you can leave it "open". For use as an external storage for ironworks it might be useful. As you are not paid for delivering it also might be no glitch till then. It may get one if you play on economy easy and for every coal put in 2 coal "produced" in the tower, haven't tried this out but getting 1 out for 2 in on economy difficult makes me assume that.
Edit: exchange ratio verified, depending on easy / normal / difficult You get 2, 1 or 0.5 towercoals.

have anyone found out how many shovels of coal 1 "unit" of coal tower output gives?
I think the exchange rate from hopper coal ("coal as cargo") to tower coal ("coal as fuel") differs from different difficulty settings, but what about from "coal as fuel" to shovels?

i have only verified the 1 cube of coal from the coal tower gives 830 scoops of coal in the bunker of the Ruby Basin.
have not tested the other bunkers or tenders, since the ruby basin has the smallest amount of coal on board, and that will take 200 hours of game play to use.

The whole coal mechanic needs a re-balance pronto.
I noticed there's a guy above saying that one cube is 1000 scoops, i.e. force-full-refill.
The amount per se is not wrong. One cube being 1 ton and 1 shovel being 1 kg is not unrealistic, so I guess maybe increasing burn rate would suffice.

Has anyone tried trans-loading coal from hopper to tender? That is, hopper and tender on adjacent tracks, and click the unload on the side of the hopper facing the tender?

transloading does not work.
