Turntable Locking
I would like to see a way to lock the turntables to a certain track, because I have the problem that my turntables like to wander off the track that I rotated them to. Also, when the Uinta Mallets?

Locking turntables would be great, or at least a fix for whatever caused them to start wandering off in the first place. As far as the Mallets? Whenever they're ready AND keume decides to put them in. Personally, I would rather get a few more QOL fixes, and maybe some more activities to do before we get more trains.

I think with turntables locking, it's really going to come down to a question of whether or not a specific turntable design had a locking system or not. The early wooden ones, like in the game currently, didn't have that. The trains on them were light enough that if the turntable wandered some it either didn't go far, or you could just grab five guys from the shops and push it back to where it needed to be. When heavier locomotives started coming into being though, turntable wandering became an issue. So it became common to see the heavier steel turntables (built to deal with heavier locomotives) have locking devices. Since in those cases, if it wandered it took a while to stop, and you'd need to clear the shops out to get enough guys to get it back where it needed to be if you were hand pushing it around and not using something like a tractor, or donkey (4 legged stubborn variant) to move the turntable around.

When it comes to turntable locking in the game, I assume we're talking about how unsupervised turntables have been drifting out of whatever alignment they were left in, as opposed to them running passed an intended alignment with a train. After all, the later can be mitigated by using a bit more finesse when you get close to stopping.

This can't be a driving factor. We don't have a working Johnson bar. The cylinder clocks are non- functional. You cant have vital train mechanics not modeled and then tell your customers "too bad the turntable is miserable to use, that what it was in 1895" 🙄

This is a game, its "supposed" be for a casual gamer not a hard core sim, the turntable needs to snap to track, it does when you build it (I can argue not in real life did track snap together too btw) - Its clearly possible its just laziness as to why it isn't.

This game is a simulation, with the development team working under the ruling of keeping it as realistic as possible. The johnson bar thing was being worked on, but a group of users thought it best to drive out the person working on that... Just search for "Brazil" here on the Steam discussions and you can see what I'm talking about.

And here we are.

I know we want realism but somethings just aren't feasible in a video game. I know some turntables may have not had locks but this is still a game and trying to be so historically accurate with certain things might make the game unenjoyable for some who like to play single player a lot. Locking turntables would be a huge plus.

If you continue to look at the turntable push bar after it stops moving for about 5 seconds, it locks. I haven't had a a problem with them moving. At lest the newest turntable on all new track.

Agreed

I think with locking turntables is just like a lot of other things: the practical usability in game would be so much that weather or not its istorically accurate i dont care. Also its not strictly necessary: it would be fully sufficiant if they were easy to control and would stay at wherever you set them, but the turntable turning past the position where i stop moving it for 20s before it stops and requireing you to feather it back and forth till its in position is anoying. So while i would also like it to "snap" to rail position it would be totally fine if it doesnt but has a crisp and faster movement than currently. Its a pain and i dont play to endure pain.

Yes, I always liked the idea of click left or right and the turntable rotates until it snaps to the next available track. That way you just do a few clicks on way or the other until it snaps to the track youd like the turntable to index to.

Yes that would be a great option.

I've manged to decrease drift by making sure my cursor isn't anywhere neat the turntable after I've set it and made sure its stationary. But I still get a derailed tender or engine frequently because of some little drift. The turntable, like everything else, is controlled by the mouse, and it's apparently sensitive to movements it shouldn't be. Ever notice when you have the saw on a nearby tree trying to cut it down and it wont budge, but a tree behind it that is well outside the reach of the tool is cut down. The lock is needed to counter current control bugs.
