How do you actually use Mnemonics?

How do even use mnemonics?? I single and double click on them, try to drag them into a slot on a skill, click on one of the three skill slots, etc. and nothing happens. HELP!

You have to unlock the slot first by leveling the skill. An unlocked slot doesn't have an "x." After that you just click on the slot and then click the mnemonic (I think).

Skills can be upgraded with martial arts experience, and a slot will be unlocked every three levels. The highest skill level is nine.
