Weaving and forging

I can't figure out how to get started with these two skills. It says "To begin" seek counsel from blacksmith" (or some such), but they don't want to talk to you about it, if you are not at least a beginner.

I reset my character as a son of a Hunter. Then I asked him to teach me the starter skill. Or you can gift someone who has the forge skill until they reach 100 points, then ask them to teach you. Then use the forge at the blacksmith many times to upgrade the skill.
