Nowhere near enough points

I am about to fight the eye boss, I think his name is Xantham or something like that. I have only obtained 10 experience points so far. How am I ever going to unlock another ability at this rate? From what I read, it looks like im halfway done with the game. I have the initial burning hands spell, magic missile and fire ball. Am I doing something terribly wrong?

you are at the end of the first ACT. i think there are 4 or 5 ACTs

It seems impossible to reach max level by the end of the game. I'm a thorough player and made sure I gained all the XP I could and I was at level 18 before the end of the game. That was my first playthrough on Easy (other than back in the PS2 days). I haven't finished my playthrough on Hard yet to see if the XP gained is different.

But, like sindren said, you're only at the end of the first act. Make sure you're not skipping past enemies or rooms where you could gain some extra XP.

The XP gain is indeed different for each harder difficulty as well as better loot drops and gear in the shop. How I play is beating Act 1 on easy mode to acquire some beginning xp and points and then making a new game and loading in that character.

If you aren't against gimmicking the game for some boosts to your xp/level, you can always do boss fight imports. You'd create two saves before any boss, Xantam for example. Kill the boss, go back to a save point, save in one of the slots, then reload the first save before you fought the boss. Import the character from the save after you'd kill the boss, then repeat. If done right, you can do a bit of grinding on bosses for a while to get yourself up to snuff before other areas. Especially useful for preparing a character for Extreme mode, if you've the desire.

start an extreme mode game with a level 1 character and use level warp/invincibility to second to last level "hall of remembrance." The level warp menu is locked, you'll know when you reach the bottom, then just press up once and warp. From there go back to "Black Forge" and kill the giant iron golem knight that drops onyx sword. When he dies you'll go from 1 to max level instantly. Except for Drizzt..he starts as level 16 so you'll have to farm quite a few times to finally reach 40.

i usually just kill him with burning hands, idk lol i dont usually get a second ability until i can unlock ball lightning, all burning hands for a looong time
