Unable to play co-op with friend

I have a controller, by friend does not, we both own the game; we're unable to get co-op play to work for either one of us. When I get invited it shows the keyboard mouse under my friend, and the controller under me (or vice versa if I invite him). I make sure to press 'A' on the controller to accept. We've tried assigning my controller to slot 1 and slot 2 for both when I host and when he hosts. Regardless outcome is always the same: 2nd controller is not detected, and we both control the "player 1" perspective.

You only need one copy of this game to play together. I don't know if there is a traditional co-op mode, but if just one of you of starts the game and invites to "Remote Play" together, that should work.

Maybe both of you having the game installed is the problem? Maybe one game needs to be 'hidden' or 'deleted'?

my brother and i just got this game and remote play seems to only work if your both using controllers. although we havent had much luck with that since i keep taking control of his character and camera movement on his monitor and vice versa

Its Controller only i think?, BUT
To jegers its so which person press first some Buttons can control them, and Player 1 has always the first priority

Just chiming in to confirm that I have been able to get Remote Play to work when both players have controllers. Not sure why that's a requirement, but it does appear to be a hard one.

also with my friend and me, it worked without problems,

only the INternet Connection need to be a little bit better, then it works very well.

You both need Controllers. This solved the problem for us!

to kaien i had him using his character for a bit and had him import a character to second player for me and it still kicked him to second player. but if i host the game it works perfectly so maybe it depends on how new your hardware is to the other player?

Played remote play yesterday and it worked well. We are both using xbox one controllers.

Get Parsec instead of using steam's remote play together. You can share mouse/keyboard in that one, and your friend will be able to play with the keyboard.

This is a video i made to help out those people who are struggling with remote play. Only one person needs to own the game. Launch the game and open up the steam overlay. Click the remote play button and copy the remote play link , and then send it to the friend you want to play with on your friends list. They will then click on that link and join your game. Keep in mind that the host and the joining player both need controllers connected to their PC's to play 2 player co-op.
