Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance

rating each character solo mode?
Been playing the game since I remember it from my childhood on the ps2, I've been playing as my old favorite the dwarf and its a LOT harder then I remember, then again I probably played on easy and not normal back then but I've noticed that the dwarf has a much harder time against a lot of enemies like the big bug hulk monster that will 2 shot me very quickly, or the ice giants who I tried to block and 1 tap when they stomped me and killed me in one hit.

Don't get me started on the ice dragon, but what I'm trying to say is that I'm guessing ranking wise the dwarf is probably the worst of them with ranged abilities being king in the game. So which class is the most powerful in a solo game? Also how does Drizzt stack up I legit didn't even know about this character until recently.

This, Sorceress is weak until you get Ball Lightning, then your essentially become a god. I am playing on Hard and i only ever die if i get myself surrounded (mostly by spiders).

If you want the easiest time, go Sorceress, the first few levels you can spend on whatever, but make sure yo build up your skill points to get Ball Lightning as soon as possible (i got it by the beginning of Act 2, in the initial areas). I started saving skillpoints around lv4 or 5.

Once you have it, game becomes MASSIVELY easier, save up skillpoints to further upgrade it and once you hit rank 2 and onwards, its a breeze. Even enemies with resistance to magic/lightning will still get enough damage that it wont matter.

I have it on Rank 3 and not only the Ice Dragon was a breeze, but Act 3 so far is just a slaughter of enemy monsters left and right.

Yeah I thought that might be the case, I'm probably going to switch to her because I'm playing a normal campaign as the dwarf right now and its a real pain, most mobs it isn't so bad but whenever it comes to ranged mobs I basically have to spam the mace slam attack to do bad aoe damage for like a minute and a half before they die its super annoying.

Honestly, best character is very subjective depending on how far you plan to go in the game.
A simple easy/ normal/ hard playthrough, they are all pretty decent but the archer and dwarf have it easier in the beginning. The elf has no melee feats and really suffers early until you can get some good spells. Despite being called an "archer", Vahn is actually more of a jack of all trades and many of his passives improve his melee abilities as well.

Now if we are going into extreme mode, here is where it starts to get interesting. If you only plan a single extreme run, sorceress is most people's go-to, because she is not nearly as gear dependent as the others once she has spells, namely a decent amount of ranks in ball lightning. Vahn and Kromlech rely much more on their weapons, and since you won't start extreme with anything they have a much tougher time, especially Vahn because no merchants in the entire game on that difficulty sell bows.

If it comes to min-maxing for most powerful overall by level 40, fully geared with ideal armor and weapons in extreme mode, hands down it goes to the archer, for 2 reasons-
1) almost as good as the dwarf in melee.
2) overall as good or better than the sorceress at range, and the reason comes down to a single skill with a good bow- hail of arrows. from a distance you can hit multiple enemies, and up close its practically a shotgun blast against a single target. The only issue is you are seriously going to need to save-scum the hell out of chests in extreme onyx tower to get him to that point.

I've played a full play through of both the archer and sorceress at this point, I just wish the dwarf was better, I remember I got screwed by anytime there were ranged units. He just felt to dependent on chugging healing potions like Gatorade to survive.

Honestly, neither me or my friends ever played the dwarf, even back in the old ps2 heyday when we used to couch co-op in the army barracks. We always used sorceress and archer. Since the best weapon in the game is a 1h sword and most of his abilities revolve around other weapon types, and his lack of much in the way of ranged skills, we generally just never picked him. Its quite a stark contrast to the second game where the barbarian was easily one of the best characters.

So I powerleveled a dwarf to get a feel for if he can keep up with the other 2 classes in extreme, and i was pretty disappointed. He has 3 active abilities, and of those two of them are weapon dependent, and the only weapon that lets you use all 3 is a warhammer. The bigger AOE skill, Clangeddin's Fist, only does a fixed 40 damage to all nearby targets and can only be done with a warhammer. Whirlwind deals weapon damage but can only be done with a 2 handed axe or warhammer and deals knockback, so you will only get a couple hits on an enemy before you have pushed it out of range. Also with a warhammer you will do less damage overall, even fully invested into str, than Vahn can do with the onyx sword while still being able to use a shield. Vahn's repulsion not only deals more damage than Clangeddin's fist, but is also a massive crowd control knockback, and again, he can still use a shield with it. Bull Rush's damage is laughable and is really only a quality of life mobility tool. Also max damage warhammer deals 29-140 damage as a 2h while the onyx sword is 90-120 1h, meaning it hits harder much more consistently. After having experienced all classes, i have a Tier list I would rate them on at level 40-

Vahn- S tier with the right equipment. Great in melee and at range.
Adrianna- A tier. Great at range, not gear dependent.
Drizzt- B tier. You can't upgrade his weapons and he has limited abilities, but he does hit for lots of crits and shatters and attacks very fast.
Kromlech- C tier. Even as the dedicated melee character he still falls behind Vahn and Drizzt at doing the same job, 2 of 3 abilities are weapon locked to mediocre weapons, and the 3rd is only useful as a traversal skill.
